Updating the remote at initial setup

During setup of my new DirectTV streaming box I am prompted to press the fast forward and fast reverse buttons simultaneously for three seconds to perform updates.  When I do this the blue lights start flashing but the process stops and the remote is not updated.

I cannot get past this point.

Where did you get the box from? Perhaps the DIRECTV STREAM box is already paired to another remote and hence it cannot pair to this one. Otherwise, try restarting the DIRECTV STREAM box, replacing the batteries in the remote, and trying again.

I had this happen once it was because there were already 2 remotes paired to my box.  I had to go into the settings and remove the other remotes before I was able to pair the one that I was attempting to pair.  But that would be hard to do if you do not already have a working remote control that can get you into settings. If you reset the box with the red button on the side and you still cannot pair your remote then I would contact customer service as I am assuming that you bought your box through them and explain the issue that you are having.  If you bought your box elsewhere then you may have bought a dud box that cannot be used because the former person did not have it paid off.

The box and remote are new. I restarted the box and the setup proceeded normally.
