Charged Late Payment Fee on a $0.05 bill

I was charged a $9.00 late payment fee on a bill that is $0.05 (5 cents). If BIG ATT is that conerned about 5 cents then they don't need me as a customer. Cancel my account.

See if ATT Customer Care can help, click the ATT Customer Care link in my signature below, send the PM, explain your late fee situation.

Include your name, account #, email address and a good phone # (land or cell) and time to contact you on.

Check the blue PM envelope, upper right on every page, for their reply. Good luck 😉

How much of a late payment do you think AT&T should "not count" as late?

Wherever it puts the cut-off, someone a few cents over that is going to make the same comment you did.

The only way to be fair and consistent is to say "If the balance due is not received in full by the date indicated, the payment is considered late."

I would venture a guess that a computer spits out late notices and the computer doesn't care if it's .05, $5 or $50.  Late is late.

Once myu grandpa was undercharged with insurance by $0.01, so he taped a penny to the letter and sent it back to them. Smiley Happy

I was charged a late fee as well for a trivial amount.  The bill was $87.53 and for some reason I made the check out for $87.23.  For this I got a $9 late fee.

I understand the system is automated and doesn't care what the late amount is, but I was treated really badly when I called about it.  The operator in broken English tried to stick to a script about selling me more services.  When we got to the topic of late fees, she read a new script about how AT&T was perfectly within its rights to charge me a late fee, and I was a bad person for not paying on time.  The whole time she is saying this there is some kind of party going on in the background that involved cheering and yelling, drowning out the operator's voice.  Finally she read a script about how she was doing me this tremendous favor by waiving the late fee just this once.

In my area I an stuck with a choice of only two (horrible) Internet providers, so I guess I won't close my account just yet.  But I will not recommend AT&T to anyone and I will look to leave at the first opportunity.
