Chicago Amusement Tax

Hi,

Can somebody explain to me how Chicago Amusement Tax is billed to my account. From my understanding this tax is imposed on residents' of Chicago and should be billed based on corresponding address.

I do not live in Chicago. I live Niles area which is city on north side of chicago.

I called customer service and pretty much get the same stupid response "it is a law, you have to pay it" I understand that it's a law for residents living in Chicago. I don't get how this bill or allocated. Can someone shade some light on it.

If you google Chicago you'll see that city limit lines border Niles, IL.  Maybe some of Niles is in, and other parts are out.

From the Official Ruling

13. The Department will utilize the rules set forth in the Mobile Telecommunications Sourcing Conformity Act, 35 ILCS 638, to determine sourcing for the amusement tax. In general, this means that the amusement tax will apply to customers whose residential street address or primary business street address is in Chicago, as reflected by their credit card billing address, zip code or other reliable information

You might want to contact the Chicago Department of Finance at 312-747-4747 or email at revenuedatabase@cityofchicago.org for some clarity.

This is the part I don't understand why att is billing me for chicago amusement tax when my address is not in Chicago area. I had this services for 12months but they added Chicago amusement tax 5 months ago.

Chicago Department of Finance tells me that they don't know why I am billed for it when I don't live in Chicago.

Att customer service tells me that's a law and should contact Chicago Department of Finance.

I am lost in this loop of disinformation.

It should be based on the address and not some border line.

Reading this makes it sound like the tax applies to all of Cook County.

Except as otherwise provided by this section, an amusement tax is imposed upon the patrons of every amusement which takes place within the County. The rate of the tax shall be equal to three percent of the admission fees or other charges paid for the privilege to enter, to witness or to view such amusement, unless subsection (f) of this section provides for a lower rate.

I LOVE Chicago (DD#2 did undergrad at UIC and worked at SeaDog) but they have got some crazy taxes like a water bottle tax, a check out bag tax, soft drink tax (they may have repealed that one), a tire fee when you buy tires, and a parking tax to name a few.

Again, I Heart Chicago but it ain't cheap to live there.

To be honest I don't mind paying this tax if it is required but I don't believe it is. It is an error and att it is just pocketing it
