Death of main account holder

My father passed away and my parent's AT&T is in his name. Do we need to have him removed and put the account in my mother's name? Where do we go from here? Thank you!

If any others are looking to change the account holder, you can go through Transfer Billing Responsibility (supersede).

A loss in the family is something we know can be a difficult time in our lives. It can be even more stressful when we are attempting to close out or cancel their account.

We would like to help make this a bit easier to for you. For the latest information on how to close out or cancel their account, please refer to Death In The Family – How to Cancel An Account.

So sorry for your loss.

You don't have to change anything; there's not problem with having it in his name still. Just make sure you mother has all the information (account number, passcode, security question, etc.). A lot of widows like having their husband's name associated with things still since it makes it less obvious to strangers they are women living alone.

On the other hand, keep in mind how your mother will feel getting mail address to him month after month. My grandmother opted to keep everything in Grandpa's name after he died, and it took a while to get used seeing his name when she sent me emails.

Long story short, though, whichever is better your family will be fine for AT&T's purposes.

Edit: Sorry, didn't realize this was in the uverse section. No clue on their policies yet.

Unless you're in Oklahoma, you must change the name on the account to someone elses.

per http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB410609&cv=820#fbid=Kw59BYlrSCM

We offer our sincerest condolences during this difficult time. To cancel or change an account for a deceased family member, call Customer Service at 800.331.0500 or 611 from your AT&T wireless phone:

  • You'll need to provide the account holder's Social Security number and/or the password on the account.
  • Early termination and/or Transfer of Billing Responsibility fees won't be charged.
  • The balance on the account is the responsibility of the estate.
  • The account cannot remain active under the name and Social Security number of the deceased person (with the exception of customers residing in Oklahoma). A Transfer of Billing Responsibility is required to retain the mobile number with AT&T service.

My Mother died 5-11-16. She lived alone and I need to discontinue her land line service. Her condo is being sold and new owner will turn it on in the future, I presume. Please disconnect account# [edited for privacy – please do not post personal information] I am her daughter and sole heir. I also own her condo. (Michele B ) Please accomplish this request immediately!

I wouldn’t say this is solved. The process for closing a deceased account is NOT easy, you have to direct the AT&T personnel through the process yourself or you won’t get anything done.

I went to an AT&T store and was told the store absolutely can NOT close a deceased account and to call customer service. I called customer service and was told they could not close a deceased account and I had to go into an AT&T “corporate” store - they even told me which store to go to. I assumed that maybe the first store I went to was not a “corporate” store. I go to the store I was directed to by customer service and they repeated what the first store had said.

I believe what the confusion is about is losing the assigned phone number. Apparently, the store cannot transfer a number to a different account, only customer service can. And customer service cannot close the account, only the store can. So if you need both done then you have to handle this as separate transactions. I only needed to close the account and don’t wan to keep any of the phone numbers.

Update: The store WAS finally able to close the account but here are the things that can make it difficult:

1. Bring the death certificate, they didn’t need to keep it they just needed to see it and get some info from it. Without a death certificate they won’t close the accout

2. ALL of the phone numbers associated to the account will be lost. If you say any of the numbers can’t be lost, then they won’t do it. To keep any numbers you have to sort out transfer of those numbers FIRST by calling customer service before you go to the store.

I’m not close to an AT&T so where is an address to send information (letter) to regarding my mom’s death?

@MsLydia  I would send a copy of the DC along with a letter with all pertinent information to the Office of the President (Google for address).

That being said, since this thread is 8 years old, it will be closed.  For any further guidance, please start a new thread.
