Equipment fee
I recently contacted AT&T billing department because an equipment fee showed up on my bill. I am aware that my equipment is not rented as I've had it for over a year. Suddenly a $7 fee shows up on my bill, a fee that I was told would never be applied to my account. Recently I've combined my att bill with my directv bill and I'm being told this is why I am responsible for this fee. When I combined my bills I was never informed in any way that this would result in additional charges to my account. I am disappointed that I was told combining bills would somehow lower my bill, however that is not true.

Hi Mario1231,
Thanks for reaching out! We're happy to help! I apologize about any confusion as well as your experience. As of January 1, 2015 all of our customer's are billed a monthly fee for equipment. The equipment fee is for maintenance of the equipment, meaning replacements and periodical firmware updates that occur. You can refer to our Terms of Service for any questions regarding the maintenance fee being charged on purchased equipment.
Here is the copied verbiage for your convenience: Going forward, if you have not purchased U-verse Equipment from AT&T or if previously purchased U-verse Equipment is beyond the one (1) year warranty period (from date of installation) and requires replacement, a monthly equipment fee will be charged. Here is the link http://soc.att.com/1AnoUPg for our terms of service. Please refer to section 7.(a).
Thanks,
ATTU-verseCare

Does this mean AT&T will replace equipment free of charge? Will AT&T send customers the newest version of equipment free of charge? Do we have to purchase additional insurance on equipment like what DIRECTV does? I cancelled my service with DIRECTV because of these fee's and also unwanted add ons. After years of paying fee's with no damage to equipment, I wanted to know when I "owned" the equipment. What's the bottom dollar cost of the equipment? Do we have the option to just pay the full price? I just got this email- now AT&T is providing these "add on" services? Is there a way to opt out if you don't want the addition charge or service?
As a reminder, after an initial grace period, we'll automatically provide you with additional data at $10 per 50GB if you go over your data allowance. (The maximum overage charge will still be $100 per month, per account.)
The majority of our customers' data usage will be well within 1TB each month. So if you previously purchased the unlimited Internet data option separately for $30 per month, we'll automatically remove it from your account by August 31, and credit you for the past charges. You should see the credit on your bill within one to two bill cycles after that date.
If you'd like to have unlimited data, you can still choose to purchase an unlimited Internet data option separately for $30 per month per account, after August 31. Or you can bundle your service with either DIRECTV or U-verse TV, and unlimited Internet data will be included at no additional charge.

>>Does this mean AT&T will replace equipment free of charge?
Yes, AT&T will replace faulty equipment free of charge.
>>Will AT&T send customers the newest version of equipment free of charge?
Not unless there is some reason that it needs to be replaced, but yes, if it needs replacing.
>>Do we have to purchase additional insurance on equipment like what DIRECTV does?
No.
>>Do we have the option to just pay the full price?
No.

AT&T is imposing charges for exceeding 1 TB of data per month now. They are upping it from 300/600 GB/month as announced in May (which was up from 250 GB/month but not enforced). If you signed up for unlimited service since May, then they're automatically removing that and you'd have to add it back if you want it. Otherwise, they're not adding any charge or service.

Hello, I understand my account had a promotion code that was applied until 2099 as per my online account. That information and promotion code has magically disappeared. Is it in the terms of service that promotions may be removed at your convenience? It was a huge mistake combining my bills, what a mess?!

Charging you for your router/modem that cost ATT $100 means after about 10 months you are just being robbed. File a complaint with the FTC and FCC. This needs to stop just because ATT pays off multiples of your elected officials to make this legal. It is not moral, ethical, or right but it's legal thanks to our fine gentlepersons in DC. I plan to drop all 3 of my cellphone plans after the last one is paid off and go to another provider. And, if I don't get fiber very soon, I'll go for satellite internet to make sure ATT never gets another penny from me. I pay $55 a month for 12 Mbps(to far from last switch for faster) while a fiber cable lies inactive beside my cooper service. On fiber I could be getting 300 Mbps for $35. ATT has no reason to activate that fiber when it will result in them getting less money from us people on their service boundary. *uck ATT corrupt scum that they are! I have been a customer for close to 25 years and the more I learn the more I see ATT is simply a bunch of money-grubbing crooks! You can thank your government as well they made all this legal!
