I know it's not available. WHEN will it be available in my area?
I'm not sure this message belongs here, but like everything at ATT lately, I couldn't find anywhere better to ask it in less than an hour.
We've been loyal ATT customers for nearly a decade. I pay for DSL (3.0) residential Internet service, which is the max offered here. I love its reliability...the same speed all day, every day, and we've only lost service around 7 times total.
Now we find ourselves wanting faster Internet speeds, as well as reliable HDTV service, since I can't get an HD satellite signal through the trees.
Sounds like U-verse to me, right?
BellSouth ran fiber optic cable in my neighborhood years ago, but U-verse service isn't available. Despite CS calls and online "availability" checks, we still haven't been offered U-verse service. I can't even find out WHEN or IF it'll ever be available.
We're not completely unreasonable. We totally understand that it's an equipment issue or an infrastructure issue within ATT. However, at this point, we really don't care any more. We'd really like to know why ATT hasn't upgraded their infrastructure accordingly in order to satisfy their loyal customer base? Do they even care? Do they want to lose more of us to the dreaded "C" word company?
We're frustrated, and ATT's failure to keep up, or answer our questions makes no sense at all. As much as I really do hate our local Cable provider, a jump would provide us with an immediate and significant speed boost (up to 25 Mbps), as well as HDTV service that doesn't deteriorate with the arrival of leaves in the spring. Doesn't ATT understand this, or do they just not care?

AT&T is scheduled to reach 30 million U-verse homes passed by the end of the year (2011) with their U-Verse service, or roughly 55-60% of their homes. They will virtually stop there according to President John Stankey speaking at Citibank, who announced 55-60% as their ultimate goal. He suggested that 25-30% of AT&T homes will only be offered ADSL. 20% are "not a heavy emphasis for investment," i.e. 5-10 million of AT&T's 50 million homes are screwed unless they have a decent cable alternative. (Yes, rounding means not necessarily equal to 100 %.)

Edit: For Bell South fiber, it was set-up in a different mode than ATT uses, made a circle around the houses and back, a kind of daisy chain that ATT can't seem to undo w/o a huge rebuilding investment.

So...if I read this correctly, ATT isn't directly answering my question because they respect me too much to to say "suck-it" to my face. Got it.
Thanks for the quick response. I'm adding ATT equally as quickly to my ISP hate list, just under TWC.
Thank God for unrestricted work Internet access, broadcast HD signals, and cheap Radio Shack HDTV antennas.

ATT never gives out any info on future service, only announces after it is in use. They are still 'expanding' in cities they already have Uverse existing , but suppossedly will not go into new areas from reports I've read due to Stankey's statement.

You're right Chris,
I re-read that article, and in fairness, maybe I'm being a bit too harsh.
Since we do have some U-verse customers in my city, maybe it'll still expand into my neighborhood soon. . .?
I think I'll give Stankey a quick call at Lucas Oil Stadium...you know, "the house that Peyton Manning built"? I'm sure he'd take a minute (pre-game, of course) to clarify it for me. You wouldn't happen to have the phone number to ATT's luxury Super-suite there...you know, "the house that loyal ATT DSL customers rented", would you?
Oh well, in the mean time, I'm off to search for other alternative ISP's, at least until the Super Bowl starts.
I'm sure to have better luck with those geniuses in the wireless community who decided to call the latest and greatest wireless technology "4G LTE". I'm sure they meant to pick a name (LTE) that evokes slightly slower "Light" service instead of the intended-Long Term Evolution abbreviation. They knew we'd understand, didn't they? They're so smart.

Parts of my city has Uverse, i can get Uverse internet but not phone or tv. ATT doesn't seem to have any idea when i'll get Uverse tv at my house. One rep said i would get it soon if i have Uverse internet then another said no & no idea when. I keep checking, so far it says not available. How can i find out? If ATT doesn't know who does? Kinda like Sprint 4g/LTE, outsiders seem to know more than the employees know or are allowed to say. I'm sick of Directv & the way they do their customers.

{please keep it courteous} If it is not available at this time in your area pitching a fit is not going to get it there any faster. Uverse was in my area a year before I got it at my house. I admit I was jealous that people 2 blocks over could get it and I can't. But I just stayed with Charter until it became available. It is worth the wait.

AT&T Came through my neighborhood well over 5 years ago. Large sign at entrance to subdivision telling us about how wonderful this new service would be for TV and Internet. As of today August 30, 2012 still no Uverse. Meanwhile my daughter who lives 6 miles away got same early in 2012 and already has Uverse. I am frustrated because I an stuck with this awful DSL. Not really a happy camper. NO ONE IN ATT EVER HAS AN ANSWER!!!!!

I feel your pain. I live about 100 yards from my wife's parents and they have Uverse available. I've called and emailed AT&T, but no one knows what can be done or who to talk to about this problem. One would think with Uverse service so close, why cant it be extended a few hundred yards? Between my TWC and my cell phone bills, I could give AT&T about $250 a month. I guess they don't want my money.

If I can jump in here with a similar question...
My folks live just outside of a medium-sized town in western North Carolina, and they apparently fall right in a service area gap for AT&T's DSL services. (They live on a 2-lane road about a mile outside of town, and folks down to the road toward town have service as well as folks about a 1/4 mile UP the road.) So as luck would have it, currently their only option for high-speed service of any kind (that I've found) is a satellite-based provider. The service isn't bad, but I would say it's anywhere near the value of phoneline or cable-based service. ($49.95 for 768kbps download speeds(!))
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to talk to a real-live human being with AT&T to see if there's a snowball's-chance they would ever fill in the gap. (but I know that is pretty hard to do, anyway)

I have experienced most all of the problems noted in the forum when dealing with ATT. I have learned that if you want any success you have to seperate, ATT and UVerse, they are like Coke and Pepsi, they don't know what the other is doing. By this seperation you will save yourself lots of fustration. By the way fiber optic DSL upgrade has been planned for my neighborhood for at least 5 years but still don't have yet.
