TWC Won't Release Phone Number Until I Reactivate?

So, I recently cancelled my Time Warner Cable (TWC) service and signed up with AT&T. I've had my number for a near two decades and I asked AT&T to transfer my old TWC number to my new account, which they said they would get to on March 24th.

I receive a message from AT&T telling me they can't do this due to TWC not releasing the number, the number which belongs to a cancelled account. After speaking with them, they tell me in order for the number to be released that I have to reopen the account and speak with AT&T afterwards.

So, my question is... is this a thing? Why would I have to reopen my TWC account in order for AT&T to continue the process? If this is legit, so be it, but the "matter of fact" attitude given to me by the TWC customer service personel makes me think there's some shady things going on behind the scenes.

If anyone else has had this problem, could you please enlighten me? I'm reluctant to reopen the account and get charged a month for a mere couple of minutes.

What they told you is 100% correct. Your account has to be open for the number to be ported over.  So you will need to speak with TWC and get the account reopened for 1 month and restart the porting process. After it's ported over the account will close automatically so that would be the end of it at that point. Sorry but that's how the process works weather it's a cell phone or a house phone.

I waited for my number to be ported before returning equipment and was told it was ported by AT&T.  Next day it was disconnected after returning my equipment to TWC.  AT&T screwed my service from the very get go.  I have had my number for 22 years and I am losing business everyday it is not ported over.  Why in the heck do I need to pay to reconnected when AT&T did not correctly port my telephone number prior to installation like the AT&T sales representative said they would request from TWC to port the number over for the day of installation.  I was also told not to disconnect my TWC service until my number was ported over.  I kept my TWC service for an additional 6 days because the technician called TWC to port over.  I paid AT&T & TWC for services and once again it really was not ported over.  Then I was giving a new date of portability by AT&T and guess what ?  It was not ported over.  I to was called by AT&T about 3 days prior to the last date given for the portability saying that I needed to call TWC and reconnect.   I have only had my service with AT&T for less than a month.

No, when I ordered my telephone service with At&T, I specifically asked if I needed to call TWC to disconnect and request my number to be transferred to AT&T.  I have a email verifying the number would be assigned.  They told me not to disconnect my service and that they (AT&T) would have my number ported over from TWC.  Guess what?   Someone dropped the ball and the number was not ported over during installation.   The technician called TWC and asked for the number to be ported over.  My service with TWC was not disconnected until  after the number was "supposingly" ported over.  Wrong...someone dropped the ball again at AT&T so they requested a new date. I received emails verifying the orders but again...nothing happened.
