Was told there is no equipment rental fee, but there is. Comcast let's me buy my own - ATT won't
When I called and signed up for U-Verse, I specifically asked if there was any kind of equipment rental fee, and i was told "no." My first bill comes and guess what? There is a $10 charge for "High Speed Internet Equipment Fee."
Per some forum searches, it looks like ATT doesn't let me buy my own equipment to avoid this fee. Comcast allows customers to buy their own equpment and avoid this fee.

Hi @gimmesomecoffee,
Unfortunately there is an equipment fee for U-verse devices. Buying a modem from ATT is no longer an option in our systems.

In case it wasn't clear in my original post - when I called to get U-verse, I specifically asked if there was an equipment rental fee, and the answer was no. I (now) understand that it's in the fine print on some web page. But all the price quotes I got over the phone did not include this additional $10 fee.
C'mon ATT - virtually all ATT customers roll their eyes when they see this fee. Especially since there is no similar fee for the two DVR's that come with the service. At least Comcast let's their customers avoid the $10 "equipment rental" fee by buying their own cable modem. No such option with ATT. Why would ATT want to give virutally all of their customers this aftertaste? Just shoot straight with pricing - sheesh.
'nuff said I guess. ATT knows this stuff already, and it's not going to change.

While the DVR is included in most packages, there is a fee for STBs. I believe it's $9.
