Audio prob with DirecTV Stream app on Roku

The DirecTV Stream app has a serious audio problem on Roku devices. I've experienced it on four different Roku + stream sticks and the Roku forum is full of complaints and questions. The problem is clearly unique to the DirecTV app.  Audio will suddenly drop in volume to nearly inaudible or get a lot of static in the audio stream just at random. Occasionally it will come back on its own after a time, but changing stations appears to fix it. It's terribly annoying to have to switch channels and switch back--often several times within a program hour.

Fix the app to work properly on RokuOS or folks are going to get fed up and switch to YouTubeTV or HuluLive.

I dropped DirectTV Stream in favor of YouTubTV because it saved me $30/mo and only cost me one channel I kind of cared about, but hadn't watched much in the past year. Added bonus--I am no longer having the volume issues reported above (so far...fingers crossed it stays that way).

Wow... As I'm reading this... This has been going on for 2 years??!!  I am having the same issue.  As one other person stated they thought it was their TV, I thought so too!  I am in a Different STATE and Different TV and still experiencing this issue with a Different ROKU device.

Please don't ask me to create my own post!  Can you please take all these comments and complaints and do something about it?  2 years is WAY to long for an APP issue.

This is just a customer forum. No one here is able to fix anything. Your best solution is to contact support via Twitter or Facebook.

@BobL3364  THIS is interesting!  Perhaps the problem was actually somethinig within the Roku units themselves but just seemed like it was a problem with the DirecTV stream?  Funny how no other provider caused the Roku to do this but you are saying that post 2021 units don't have the issue?  Really too bad that DirecTV just sat on their hands with this long enough to lose a bunch of customers though.  I like their product, just not impressed with their support.  @DIRECTVhelp before you give me another "we're here to help message here", know that I did call, email, and all of that multiple times before I too found this thread and started posting and keeping tabs on it.  LIke someone else said, "TWO YEARS!!"  THat's about 22 months too long for this problem to have continued WHOMEVER the problem lies with.  You guys should have been talking to Roku and vice versa a couple of years ago.  Thanks BobL3364 for the input.  I've been thinking of refreshing my hardware anyhow.  Not sure if I will light DTV back up though.  Pretty solid with the OTA now that they forced me into it and as a bonus, it hasn't cost me as much to do it as one month of DirecTV Stream. =) I'm fortunate enough to live in an area that is farily well served by OTA though.  Others don't have that luxury.

Here is another sample video of audio corruption on some Roku devices. This is on a different channel. (The clicks are from the channel audio stream and not random kitchen noise.)

Roku audio corruption - Video 2

This is to avoid the predictable question: Does this occur on multiple channels. Answer: Yes.

So does DirecTV plan to remove: CNBC, NATGEO and CSPAN along with others to fix this issue?

Sorry for duplicates (if any). This post seemed to disappear multiple times.

@BobL3364  Which ROKU devices are likely affected? Probably anything with an ARM Cortex A53 chipset. This covers most Roku devices between 2017 and 2020.

See ROKU device table

I object to handing DirecTV/Roku more money to fix their issues!

@JoeBios01

It was a bad problem with my 3820 (Premier) and 3830 (Express) models. It seemed random but effected the local channels more. Both also had audio sync problems, being severe with the 3830. Others have posted about the Ultra, but that name has been in use since 2016. There has been much discussion about this in Reddit groups. I have no audio problems with my 3941 (Express 4K+) units (5 of them). Ironically, the DirecTV rep replied that the 3941 was not compatible, even though is was then (and still is) a Roku best seller. Their compatible model list is horribly outdated. Someone posted (a guess) that the DirecTV app is very CPU intensive and cannot keep up. That could also explain why the app also has been reported to perform poorly on various smart TVs, which are notorious for having slow processors.

I first reported DIRECT TV / Roku sound issues over a year ago. The issues persisted until recently when I bit the bullet by replacing the original Roku 3810X stick with the latest 3820R2 quad core version. Problems solved!
Although I’m less than happy about purchasing a new Roku stick to fix what I suspect was always the original Roku’s ability to support some exceptional performance demands made by Direct TV’s software, at least there is a solution.

I found out that it’s an issue with older versions of Roku hardware. Direct TV can you please fix the app on the Ultra 4660X & Roku Streaming Stick+ Model #3810R, 3810X.  I upgraded a 3810 with a Roku Streaming Stick 4K  #3820R and the audio issues have not recurred with the new Roku. It doesn’t have anything to do with volume leveling, network speed or Roku settings. Something is different with the DirectTV app on older hardware of Roku.
On the 3810, audio works great for a period of time then it suddenly lowers volume and the audio quality is poor.  The settings and network speed are exactly the same on the new 3820R. I lived with the audio issue for over a year and still do on the other TVs. The other TVs with the 3810R and 3810X streaming stick+ and Roku Ultra 4660X still have the issue.
