Chromecast with Google TV

The Google Play Store for Android TV has the DIRECTV STREAM app for use with TVs that include Android TV or it is what I am being led to believe. If you have a streaming media device built on Android TV, is the app soon to be available on the Chromecast with Google TV soon. I just would like a heads up when it will be available.

Good morning @kbullert,

Thank you for reaching out. We don't have an estimated time on when the service will be available on the new Google TVs, but we're always working on improving and expanding services.

Please feel free to leave any feedback or requests on this page and reach back out if there's anything else we may assist you with!

You cannot side load the Fire TV version at the moment. The new Chromecast is Android 10 and the Fire TV version of the app is Android 9.

I saw a mention here about it for Android TV - https://thestreamable.com/live-tv-streaming/att-tv-now/supported-devices

I still have the initial discount from when the service started so its basically the same price as Youtube TV. If I cannot find a solution I may be forced to dump DIRECTV STREAM for another service that is available.

I am happy with DIRECTV STREAM right now and have no immediate plans of leaving the service. As sales of the Chromecast with Google TV ramp up after the initial release, I would have to believe that DIRECTV would release an app for Android TV. There is no current app for the LG webOS at the moment, but the same would hold true. It is all simply supply and demand. If there is enough demand seen for an DIRECTV STREAM app, they will release one. Though, I would say the app for Samsung TVs is lacking a bit.

As already stated, that article is wrong. There is no DIRECTV STREAM app for Android TV.

The apk that everyone sideloads from Fire OS doesn't work with the new Chromecast w/Google TV.

Now that Google has created a true competitor to Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV, i truly hope they gets their head out of the sand and develops an official app for Android TV(Google TV).

For the price, and after the debacle with Peacock and HBOMax on Roku, i see Google TV being a serious contender and believe a lot of people who want app access, without paying Apple TV prices, and don't want the Amazon ads from Fire TV, are going to be buying this Google TV device.

So, if you're listening. MAKE AN ANDROID TV(GOOGLE TV) OFFICAL APP! We pay good money for your service, and deserve an app to watch the content we pay for. Or. We will leave and go to another service, like YouTube TV.

I'm using the DIRECTV STREAM app from the Play Store on my Chromebook:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.tv

It works similar to the Roku app. Yeah, it doesn't show availability with the Chromecast w/GTV, but there's an apk out there.

I am already in Developer's Mode, now to try side-loading (my wife spends almost all her streaming time so I make it work or the dongle goes back).

Update:

Well, I have the DIRECTV STREAM app up and running on the Chromecast with Google TV using the above sites, but it's pretty ugly.

(Note: I tried editing my initial input, but it didn't seem to take; thus, a second post.)

1. As I move around on the white screen, nothing highlights. In Settings | Preferences, I would see a light gray background on the item I've arrowed down to, but not in My Library or Watch Now.

2. It also jumped around a lot, like between Library and Watch and sometimes selected something even when just using the arrows to get around.

3. I believe this is because it is set up for Touch input. The saving factor on my Chromebook is: I have a cursor to move around if I don't want to use the touchscreen; we don't have a cursor on the TV, though.

So, I guess we need to wait (and wait & wait?) for them to allow us to use their services on this new Google TV device.    :(

Update 2 (and last):

I connected a mouse last night--I had to use my Chromebook's power pack to have enough power--and it worked right off.

So I open the DIRECTV STREAM app and can move around and select things just like on a computer. Library, Guide, Discover, Preferences, all worked. Sort of.

In Guide the mouse scroll wheel would move the Guide up and down, but only the few stations initially displayed showed shows. Going up and down just showed a blank Guide for the other stations.

Last but not least, I was so busy just trying to select things that I missed one crucial feature missing: No Sound.

The app has been uninstalled. I can't wait too long to return this to Best Buy as they only give you 15 days, so I'll wait it out that long for them to make the app available for this new device.

DTV Stream Box is not an option when I stream to 5 TVs.  I have found GoogleTV dongle is better than Firestick and have switched all 5 over to that.  DTV Stream is not an option to replace my YouTubeTV and Fubo services unless/until they have an app on GoogleTV.
