Chromecast with Google TV
Can you install the DirecTV Stream app into the Chromecast with Google TV? I don't want to have to "cast" my phone to the device. I want to have the app installed on it.
I don't want to spend 40$ or 50$ on the Chromecast with Google TV and find out that I can't download and install the DirecTV Stream app on it.
Or do I have to buy a Roku or Fire Stick?

I don't want to buy it and find out that it's not available... So I'm trying to find it if someone knows for sure that it's available prior to purchasing.

If you can not download it then its not available. There is no cost in determining that with any app.

I don't want to spend 40 or 50 dollars on the Chromecast with Google TV if I don't know that the DirecTV Stream app can be downloaded and installed on it.
Or do I need to buy a Roku or Fire stick.

We want to help by sharing the most accurate info. You can indeed use the DIRECTV STREAM services on your Google TV through Chromecast, moreover you'll need to do it from your phone.
you can find more details on this link (https://direc.tv/3Gh6SSy) .

The short answer is no, the DirecTV Stream app does not support installation from the Google Play store onto Chromecast with Google TV. When this device was listed by DirecTV Stream as supported, it was for "Chromecast" operations from another device (tablet, phone, etc).
To my knowledge, the only supported devices that will install a DirecTV Stream application are Roku, FireTV/Stick, and certain Samsung televisions. In addition to these devices, there is also the C71KW-400 (Osprey) streaming box for DirecTV Stream. This is an Android TV device and remote control designed specifically for DirecTV Stream.

What abartonkc says is right on. The link provided by DIRECTVhelp would eventually help you reach this page:
https://www.directv.com/support/stream/article/KM1226927/
which tells you how to cast from a Computer or Mobile device to a Gen 2 (or later) Chromecast.

Thank you Abartonkc and JefferMC. I have a Samsung TV and have the same buffering issues as everyone else with the DirecTV Stream app on a Samsung TV as I've read in this forum.
So my next decision is Roku, fire stick and maybe the box. It's sad though that the app cannot be fixed to work correctly which makes me not want to give DirecTV Stream more money than I already do.

Get the Dtv Stream box. I have one and it's better than any app. Plus the box has google play store on it so u can download apps.

Ludwick577... The only reason I have DirecTV Stream is because of Hockey. I don't know that I want to be that loyal of a customer to drop 120$ on their box, when they don't want to fix something that's apparently been flawed for so long. Fix the app DirecTV Stream.(or put an*and a footnote that says we support Samsung TV's but don't work properly)
Abartonkc... What the long answer? Can it be side loaded on to the Chromecast with Google TV?
I was able to side load the app to a Sony TV.

Hey, @PalmS. We want to share with you some tips that might help you to improve your DIRECTV STREAM service on Samsung TVs.
1. Check your TV for software updates.
2. Uninstall and then reinstall the DIRECTV STREAM app.
3. Make sure your TV is connected to your home network.
Have you tried changing from Wi-Fi to Ethernet or the other way around?

We want to share some tips that might help to improve your viewing experience on Samsung TVs.
1. Check for wireless interference: Cordless phones, microwave ovens, or other wireless devices near their router that can cause wireless interference. If possible, move these away from their wireless router.
2. Reduce usage of other devices currently accessing the network, such as other streaming players, computers, game consoles, and mobile devices.
3. Press and hold the power button on the remote control for five seconds to reset of the TV.

@PalmS,
I've used the Roku, Firestick, and the C71KW-400 streaming box. Based on my experience, the streaming box provides the best interface and responsiveness. After that, I would say the Roku app has a slightly better interface and response to user input compared to the Firestick. My Firestick is a first-generation so the responsiveness could be attributable to the device hardware and specs.
