DIRECTV STREAM box stuck in HDR as default setting

I cannot believe this is an issue and apparently has gone on for MONTHS. Even during beta testing. This box forces HDR which is completely unacceptable. I just signed up for service a few days ago assuming this issue was fixed a long time ago. DIRECTV STREAM please fix this problem and allow us to disable HDR. It’s completely useless and looks terrible when watching tv since all content is in SDR.

Good morning @SirGr8Ness,

Thank you for reaching out to us! What exactly is occurring to the content with HDR, is there something specific that's occurring to the video? Also, is this occurring on specific channels?

That is the problem. DIRECTV STREAM does not show HDR content when watching tv. Content is in SDR NOT HDR. The box defaults output to HDR which makes the picture look bad. There is no settings in the box to correct this. The DIRECTV STREAM team needs to fix this for we can turn off the HDR or disable it completely.

We'd like to look further into this.

Please press the red button on the side or unplug it for 30 seconds, then turn it back in and let us know if that helps at all.

Does not help or correct the problem. This is a known issue across the internet with customers complaining.

Good morning @SirGr8Ness!

Currently, we do not have any confirmed Outages or cases where the DIRECTV STREAM Device forces HDR, but we'd be happy to take a further look and see if this is specific to your device.

Please try restarting your device by pressing the red button on the side or unplugging it for 30 seconds and let us know if that helps.

Just a silly thought. I don't have the option to test it myself since my TV is 1080p, not 4K/HDR.

Has anyone tried to use an older HDMI 1.3 or lower cable?

As I read these older cables don't carry 4K. Maybe this will force the box to show max 1080p output, which could mean no HDR on a 4K TV set.

I just got an DIRECTV STREAM box today and could not believe this ridiculous issue is still going on. Do the DIRECTV employees not have a decent TV to see this happening? I was wondering why the Roku feed is a million times better looking than DIRECTV STREAM box be and now I know. You can't put a TV in forced HDR mode and feed it regular standard programming. Sure you can use Roku but that's not why I got the service so until the boxes fix this things going back. Incredibly disappointed that it's still going on.

DIRECTV employees. Canned answers like pressing the reset button or changing the HDMI cable is not going to fix this. Find someone with a 4K HDR TV there's only a million of them out there hook the box up and see what the thing does and how incredibly crappy the picture is. Then maybe someone will actually fix it?

Has not been fixed. I won’t use it because I have an OLED tv.

I was coming here to post my concerns about the three DIRECTV STREAM boxes I have in the house after having it for a couple weeks.

EVERYTHING output to HDR even news channels...I mean everything and I cannot enjoy a show or movie because it’s SO DARK and not because of my picture settings. It’s because HDR is constantly on when it shouldn’t be. I know my picture settings are great because I’ve had my television professionally calibrated.

I’m not sure what to do and it so hard to get ahold of DIRECTV STREAM support because my business mobile phone service is with them so I get transferred to the work department all the time.

Same issue hear.  I found a workaround, not sure of how much or a workaround it is though.  On my 4K Samsung, I enabled HDR10 which then allowed me to change the Gamma from the default ST.2084 to ST.1886. No other settings, even did a reset of the picture setting to be sure only those two settings.  It seems to be working well, haven't fully tested it though.  Not sure if next time I stream HDR content through the box it won't rest the Gamma setting.  Going from an app loaded on the TV, same app/content the default Gamma setting works fine as well as the ST.1886 setting.  Just thought, need to go see if in developer mode there is a way to adjust the Gamma....

Even if it is. To little to late. The boat sailed a long time ago when I got the Apple TV 4K.

It’s so strange. One day it was SDR, but now it is back to HDR.

Side note: how much better is the live tv through Apple TV 4K? Does it have to be 4K version?

I am able to pause live tv on my Apple 4K.

Live tv is better with the Apple. No forced HDR and you get proper audio. If you need or want 4K. Go for that one. If not. Just get the standard 1080p Apple TV.

With the app on the Roku or AppleTV you don’t get all the channels and there are no channel numbers.

That’s at least the first things I’ve noticed.

oh and it does look a lot better on the AppleTV.
