DirecTV Streaming and ROKU Audio Issue

I found this complaint and, since it describes the issue I’ve had for months, I edited it for this description. Kudos to the author as it describes this problem exactly.

The DirecTV Stream app has a serious audio problem on Roku devices. I've experienced it on 4 different Roku devices (2 stream sticks and 2 Ultimate units) the Roku forum is full of complaints and questions. The problem is clearly unique to the DirecTV app.  Audio will suddenly drop in volume to nearly inaudible or get a lot of static in the audio stream just at random. Occasionally it will come back on its own after a time, but changing stations appears to fix it. It's terribly annoying to have to switch channels and switch back--often several times within a program hour.

I have never had an audio issue by Roku's. I use Roku 3 and 4 with several sticks. None are the real newer ones but still perform as expected. I would not say the forum is full of complaints but they have been some noted. Of course it's a forum, you would expect complaints not praises.

I have 2 Ultras, 1 Roku 4 and a Roku TV, and have never experienced this problem, on any of them.

I have the same sound issues as wallycpa.  I noticed the problem in the July/August 2021 timeframe (start of DirecTV Stream) and without looking into it I thought it was all streaming apps on the Roku.  I figured the 2015 Roku 2 we had was going bad so I purchased a new Roku Ultra LT in October 2021.  After still having the same problem with the new Roku I started paying attention to what app we were watching when the sound issues happened and they only happened when watching DirecTV Stream.  We first signed up with DirecTV NOW in December 2018 and have had no problems until now.   Have tried all of the fixes but nothing has worked.

Hello @skipwb1969, let's fix your audio issue.

If the DIRECTV STREAM app launches on your Roku player, but doesn't play and sound, plays sound that's out of sync with video, or has other sound problems, try these options:

1. Check the volume level and mute settings on your TV and any audiovisual (A/V) receivers you may have.
2. Try changing the cable or changing the A/V cables, one at a time. Composite cables are usually red and white
3. Make sure that any composite cable sound connectors are snugly attached to both the Roku player, the TV, and any A/V receiver.
4. Connect your Roku player to a different input to see if you can hear sound.
5. Check or change your Roku audio settings by selecting Home, then Settings, and finally Audio.
6. Set HDMI and S/DIF to Dolby/D.
7. Set HDMI to PCM-Stereo.

I had a similar issue with the app on Roku Express (two different ones). The only way to fix it was to set the audio to stereo. Of course that is not ideal, so I just went ahead and bought the stream box. No audio issues on that, plus it has a full function remote which makes things much easier. No issues on any other app, just the DirecTV Stream app.

The suggestions above make no sense if all other apps work fine.

We have this issue. Never had it with Roku/YouTube TV combo but it started when we switched to DirectTV Stream/Roku. I swapped an Amazon Firestick with the Roku Ultra and have not had the problem on this main TV since then! The TV with the Roku now has the sound problem. I prefer Roku/YouTube TV but I switched to Direct to have Tennis Channel(another issue).

We have the same audio problems with all of our three TV's and ROKU's with Direct TV streaming. We have tried all of the above fixes and it may work for a day or two, but starts again. The sound will lose volume, the sound will really distort or go totally out of sync. We change the channel and then go back, and it fixes it but only temporarily. We even had our internet upgraded to see if that would fix the problem but it did not. It occurs on every TV at different times. We have Samsung and LG TVs. We have different ages of ROKU's. We are at our wits end. We cut the cable cord to stream but now we are paying pretty much the same amount with worse service. We have adjusted, upgraded, updated, changed cords, settings and even bought new Roku's. Nothing is helping.

Is your audio set to stereo or dolby? Have you tested any audio settings?

Yes it has been set on both at different times. I have tested all audio settings on all of our TV's. It will work for a day maybe and then go right back to being fouled up. Right now it is on stereo but I have had to change the channel twice today and then return to the channel I was watching.

Betting you will not have this problem using a Firestick as opposed to Roku!!

As I noted above, the "box" works really well. Much better having a "real" remote too.

I just don't think I should have to spend any more money than I already have to watch the few channels that I actually watch.

If $45 is going to break the bank to resolve all of the audio issues and then some, perhaps people should just cancel the service.

It only happens on Direct TV streaming. It does not happen on Netflix or Amazon. It is a Direct TV problem, not ROKU or my TV.

I have had audio problems using the Roku Express 3930 and the Roku Premier 3920. I replaced those units with the new model Roku Express 4K+ 3941 and there have been no problems since. Before I did the replacements, setting the audio mode to stereo helped a bit.
