DTV Stream on AppleTV issues

Hey all,

Been a long time DTV customer. I currently have a boatload of DVRs and am getting crushed by DTV receiver fees. I am giving Stream a shot. I am using it on Apple TV 4K (I have 20 of them). I am using Logitech Harmony One (the older one...and better one IMO) on each TV. Every TV is connected to an A/V receiver. Most of the TVs are 4K. You can see why the satellite service was killing me.

So far I am not happy with Stream and hope that I can improve the experience.

I have some questions:
- How do I go to a channel via channel number? This might be an AppleTV issue. I wanted to go from my regional sports channel (600s) to a local channel and I had to scroll from the 600s back to the single digits. Is there a way to program my Harmony (assuming that AppleTV can even accept direct channel IR codes)
- FFW/Rew how do these work?

- Anyone having audio issues? I can't tell what format is being decoded as right now my ATV is sending multichannel to my AVR rather than bitstream (and honestly I don't know how and if I can change that). But I know that my regional sports channel is only using the left front channel. It isn't the channel as that same channel on satellite is Dolby Digital and I am getting it decoded correctly.
- Picture seems to have compression artifacts. (I have gigabit internet and a speedtest on that AppleTV gets a reliable 900Mbps+)
- Picture seems to be artificially sharpened. Like what it would look like if you cranked up the sharpness on your TV

I am concerned that Stream cannot match my usage of the satellite service. I use 2 tuners extensively. I use 30 sec skip religiously. I knew that I'd probably lose those features but being able to directly enter a channel number was not something that I had accounted for.

Any help/tips would be appreciated.

Yeah, I am intimately familiar with the Satellite pricing. Been a customer since 1998. I have 12 HR24 DVR, 1 HR54 (Genie) 1 C61K (4K receiver) 1 C61. I bought (owned) some of those receivers early on. I had quite a few HR10-250 HDDVR back when you could buy them and they were swapped for HR which have been upgraded through the years. I also bought my own switches and other supporting equipment. I've also done all of my cabling because no installer would even entertain my config.
So I pay $7 each for 14 receivers. So basically $100 before we even talk about a plan. My LNB is flaking out but I know that DTV won't touch it anymore because the dish is on my roof.

I was hoping that DTV Stream could be an alternative but so far, I do not like it. (Hopefully someone can chime in with some help with my issues)

Hello @Cobra6I7! Thank you for reaching out.

For sound and picture fixes, you may want to :

  • Check audio settings on your device using your remote: Press the Home button, then Settings > System > Remote & Devices > Program Your Remote > Advanced Remote Program > Switch Volume Control.

Regarding the channel switch on your Apple device, you may want to contact Apple support for further assistance.

We hope this helps.

Only 4 people in my home so I will only ever be running 4 streams max and honestly my kids don't watch much on the TV. (and they each have 4K TVs in their rooms)

I've been a customer since 1998 and they've really gone downhill. They haven't introduced a new DVR in forever and I would never use a genie for normal TV viewing. So far I am extremely underwhelmed by DTV Stream. Time to look for something else. I don't mind the TV service but they kill me on my monthly charge.

From the response above about contacting Apple support, I take that to mean that there is no option for direct channel input? So for Apple TV users I really have to scroll through 100 channels to get to a channel that I want?

Because the 4 people aren't always on the same 4 TVs. In reality only 2 TVs are rarely used. But even those 2 rarely used TVs I want to have available for TV viewing.

I am not really looking for advice on Satellite service as I know it very well. I did all of my own setup (multiple stacked SWM16 switches) and it works fairly well.

I am really looking to find out if it is possible to enter channel IR codes on the DTV Stream app on ATV4K. Maybe also some help on some of those other questions that I posted. If I can't enter the channel numbers the DTV Stream app is a non-starter.

Did you ever figure it out?  I have an appletv4k too and can’t make FF or rewind work.

No. I ended up dropping DTVStream and sticking with satellite. Which I am really annoyed with because of what they charge me. For me, not being able to enter a channel number is a deal killer.
