Duplicate recording algorithm on both satellite and stream needs to be fixed.
Tennis channel 217 has multiple showings of same live event at different times on the same day.
March 6th thru 13th
2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 11am (8hrs) live
2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 7pm (3hrs) live
On satellite
If you set a series record for this event, it will not record the 7:00 p.m. episodes (at least through March 13th) because it thinks they are duplicate recordings. This has been going on for years. There is a workaround for this because you can set individual recordings and it doesn't check for duplicates.
On stream
This also occurs, but there is not a workaround. When you try to set a separate recording at 7:00 p.m., stream thinks that the 7:00 p.m. episode is being recorded. See attached photos. You'll notice that the episode is for 3 hours, but the record indicator shows the episode starting at 11:00 a.m. and the only option is to cancel the recording.
I am doing a 5-day trial of stream to see how it works. This would be a problem for me switching to stream.
Thanks

So…. Do we know if upper level DirecTV technical support has actually worked on this recording failure problem??

I don't know if anyone outside Directv knows the exact way the algorithm works. The Bloomberg case I believe is because all the "repeats" are marked by Bloomberg as "first run" which means they will be recorded. If the Tennis channel etc would mark their episodes as "first run' they would be recorded. It looks like they don't do this. If an episode is not marked as "first run" then it won't be recorded if there is already an apparently identical episode as an existing recording on the disk/cloud..

It would be hard to believe that The Tennis Channel would label two separate segments of different durations of a single continuous live program as a repeat of the first segment. For example, the first live segment is 8 hours long and the second live segment is 4 hours long so it would make no sense to mark the second live segment as a repeat of the first one which was twice as long. And if this really is the way The Tennis Channel marks the two segments with only the first segment marked as "first run" then why don't they do the same with U-Verse TV? I came over to DirecTV from U-verse TV and never had this problem with U-Verse TV. In fact, for the Miami Open a few weeks ago, I had both DirecTV and U-verse TV hooked up at the same time and the 12 hours of daily live tennis was broken up into two separate segments on DirecTV (8 hours and then 4 hours) but the same program was broken into six separate segments (2 hours each) on U-Verse TV. All segments on DirecTV had the same title and all segments on U-Verse TV had the same title but I had no problem recording all six segments daily on U-Verse TV. So obviously, DirecTV and U-verse TV are not receiving the same meta data from The Tennis Channel. Now, why would that be?

We don't know exactly how the algorithms work. But notice that the problem sports programs originate outside the US so the original metadata does not come from the Tennis channel etc. We don't know what they do with it, or what they send to each provider. We don't know how "segments" get created etc etc.

I think I may have discovered a workaround. If I use the on screen Guide on my TV and just highlight the second segment that has the same title as the first segment without clicking "OK" on the remote, I can use the Gemini remote and click the red dot record button on the remote and it will schedule the second segment to record. If I instead highlight the second segment and click the "OK" button on the remote to bring up the description of the program, it won't work because there won't be an on screen "Record" button but only a "Cancel Recording" on screen button because it thinks the second segment is the same exact program as the first segment which I had already scheduled to record. This is the problem I was having before in not being able to record the second segment. So far, it seems to have been working with the Madrid Open tennis tournament this week.
Again, it seems this will only work using the Guide on the TV screen by using the red record button on the Gemini remote. Using the mobile app to try and schedule the second segment will not work as I've experienced over the past 5 weeks of using DirecTV.

This has been a long time problem with Directv Stream. I'm trying to record Wimbledon on ESPN and ESPN2 which are recording at the same time. It records two programs but both are from only one of the networks. This has been going on for so long I can't believe it hasn't been addressed.

This is still not fixed and basically makes watching tennis tournaments impossible (especially if they are in a drastically different time zone like the Australian Open).
Please please please someone from Directv read this and make what should be a simple fix by excluding live recordings from the duplicate detection algorithm.

Directv is not going to be able to fix this.
With Bloomberg and some other programs, multiple showings are identical - same program with every instance marked as "first run" so they all get recorded.
With tennis from ESPN and Tennis channel. the original program from Europe is split iby them into two halves. They have the same title but only the first half is marked"first run". So the second half looks like a repeat.
Only the Tennis channel and espn can fix this. They need to mark both "halves" of the program in the metadata as "first run". Then Directv will record both. It's the only way.
