How to keep new shows but let old ones be deleted?
We're fairly new to DirecTV Stream. We've had it for a few months now but this is the first time we're going want to handle some episodes of TV shows differently than the way we handle other episodes of the same shows.
Apparently we can't keep more than 30 episodes of a TV show at a time. We knew about the 9 months restriction when we signed up but no one told us that we could only keep 30 episodes of any particular show. That's a problem for us so I'm trying to figure out how to do what we want to do.
We want to keep all new "Law & Order" episodes for the full 9 months but we don't care if the old ones roll off. L&O is streaming on at least 3 channels currently (BBC America, Sundance, & WE). Each channel shows 3 or more episodes a week so we always have at least a dozen older reruns picked up by DirecTV Stream every week. How can we save the new episodes that start this Thursday and not have them swept away by reruns?
Is there a way to set up 2 sets of episodes for 1 show? Then we could catch only new episodes in 1 set and then all of the reruns in the other set that could roll off as new reruns are rebroadcast? Or, if we want to save the new episodes for the full 9 months, do we have to change it so that it only saves new episodes (& then we never get to rewatch old episodes, which we still enjoy)?
Are there any other options?
Thanks,
GGuenth

From the DirecTV Stream web site: Data connection req’d. Recordings expire after 9 months. In a series recording, max 30 episodes stored (oldest deleted first which may be in less than 9 months). Restrictions apply.

Not sure if 30 is the actually limit. I have Family Guy on series recording and I've seen it store 35. I am going to let it go and see how many it will go up to.

Thank you both for responding.
@Ludwick577, We've had up to 32 episodes of Law & Order at a time. I'm guessing that that's somehow related to the number of episodes that were recorded in a day but I might be wrong. As Lou posted, the official limit seems to be 30.
@lou_do, Thanks for that. I'd seen that but I was hoping there was a way partially around it. For us that's going to mean that we can only record the new episodes. Before long, episode 1 of the new season is going to be the oldest episode in the set, which means that it will be deleted before any reruns are deleted. As long as we keep the total number of episodes down to 10 or 15 or something like that by deleting the rerun episodes manually, then I suppose that we can keep the DirecTV Stream from deleting episode 1 of the new season. The problem with that, though, is that 1 of the channels playing Law & Order reruns recently had a L&O marathon so it added 24 episodes in 1 day. If that happened & we were over 30 episodes total then it would delete the episode 1 that we're wanting to keep for the 9 months. That's disappointing.
Thanks,

When I had DirecTV Satellite I could record "First Run Only" Why is that not available on DirecTV Streaming? I have the same problem with Law & Order and Blue Bloods.

When you setup recordings on DirecTV Stream you can choose "New Episodes" or "All Episodes". "New Episodes" is pretty much the same as "First Run Only".

Peacock has about 10 seasons of Law and Order including the newest episodes. They have a promotion running for $1.99/month for 12 months. This might be a good option for you and save you a lot of headaches trying to record episodes.

Only new episodes dosen't work either! I tried to record only the the episode of chicago fire and i had 8 episodes, directv stream needs to let you record the new episode on nbc feed channel its on! I,m already regretting leaving tivo for this simple stuff the directv stream cant do.

I agree, there should be a DVR option to restrict recordings to a specific channel. This is a very basic feature that has been available for years on every other DVR I have used.

@celticpride We're leaving Spectrum and Tivo for DTVS becuase of ongoing problems with Tuning Adapters and channels not coming in and stuff not recording. It's been over a year and even with the nice discount and free premium channels they gave us for another year we're just tired of it. I am so used to Tivo and have had it all my life.
Is their a thread here about people who switched from Tivo. We are only on the 2nd day of 5 day trial and I ordered refurb boxes with remotes. It seems like it should delete the old rerun episodes and not the newwer ones. I hope we like this. I have more questions and am just joined here to skim through some of the threads.

Well I ordered the boxes and remote and am willing to give this a try for a couple weeks. I won't cancel my Spectrum/Tivo service just yet. Our Tivo Bolt has a lifetime on it I only pay 6 something a piece now for each Tivo Mini. so 12 something a month will eventually pay for the $49.99 renewed boxes we ordered. With Spectrum and having cable card and tuning adapter we just have had problems for a year now and channels not coming in all these Error messages V52 and V99 we were tired of it.

The DVR functionality is fairly limited - dare I say primitive. There are a lot of DVR enhancements they could make. These are related to filtering on series recordings (including some of the things asked for above), details on individual recordings (like extended length), management of the library, perhaps others. The general DVR capabilities haven't changed significantly since the feature was originally added years ago other than the addition of the (not completely reliable) auto-extend for some sporting events. Under DTV ownership, there have been enhancements added to the overall service (more in that year than were added in the last several years under AT&T), so we can hope that improvements to the DVR will also come.

Thanks! So you can extend some sporting events? I was just doing a chat but he said he would email me directions and didn't really want to answer my questions but that is why I am here reading. I just wanted to ask the chat person if I could get the devices here locally some where but he said they have already shipped and I should get them in 1 to 2 days.
