local channels again
I have seen various posts about getting local channels from home when out of town. The consensus seems to be that getting home channels on a pc is not a problem, but there are inconsistent opinions about devices that have location services (e.g., an iphone). Some have said that it is possible if you turn off location services on a phone, so I tried it with my ipad. The Directv stream app would not work unless I turned it back on. So I am confused. Is it possible to get local home channels on phones or ipads when out of town?

I travel all the time in a RV. I always get my home based local channels using Fire Sticks and Roku's. Cell phones, tablets, PC, Apple products, and the DirecTV Stream box, have either GPS or location services which allows identification of your location. The key is to define the device from your home base prior to your travel. On rare cases, this does not always work. Currently, out of state and watch my home base local channels.

Have you tried installing a "fake gps" app on your phone? A few months ago, I sideloaded the Dtv stream app on my Kindle HD and for some reason the Dtv Stream app thought my IP address was located in Iowa. I think b/c my Mediacom cable internet's home base is Iowa. So I installed "fake gps" on my Kindle HD--placed it in my correct location and the Dtv Stream app worked fine and got the correct locals. U might try that when you are out of town to get those locals.

So far everywhere we've traveled the Roku Streambar in our RV always shows our home locals while my iPad shows the locals for our current location.

Ludwick - Great idea! I'll give it a try. I didn't know such things existed.

By the way, I thought location was set as billing address. Is this not true in most cases?

It is set by billing location but that has to match up with IP location (location services) on some devices.

And it's not always based on billing address. As previously mentioned, some devices, like phones & tablets, have their own "location services" to determine which locals you'll receive.
