Longhorn Network
i have the Regional Sports Networks package with DirecTV Stream, and the channel lineup lists Longhorn Network (channel 677). however, i'm in New Orleans and for whatever reasons it's apparently not available in this area. is that correct? if i switched to the DirecTV satellite service would i then be able to get that channel? are there any other options?

I do not see that the Longhorn Network is available via DirecTV Stream in any package. Since you are viewing the service using channels numbers all channel may appear but if they are not available for the service the channel should be grayed out.

The Longhorn Network is not a RSN (Regional Sports Network). It's a specialty network covering U. of Texas Sports and is often regionally limited to reduce the number of subscribers that the carrier has to pay ESPN for.
DIRECTV NOW (which is what is currently called DIRECTV stream) announced in 2017 that it was limiting the channel to Texas. I don't know of any change to that policy. DIRECTV satellite supposedly has it nationwide

pardon the nit picking, but it IS listed as a "regional sports network" at:
https://www.directv.com/dtvassets/pdfs/channel_lineups/DIRECTV_STREAM_Channel_Lineup.pdf
but you are correct, with a magnifying glass i now see the foot note that says it is available only in Texas. this whole cord-cutting thing sure comes with a whole lot of gotchas.
thanks for the quick reply.

You are correct. I was only looking under sports as National. Did not cross my mind the regional selection. Long time ago it was a channel in the guide for subscribers on the old plan packages. Thanks for the info.

Within the obvious meaning from the words, "regional sports network," I suppose that it is. I see that DIRECTV listed it under RSN's on your chart. They didn't list the PAC10 network, the SEC Network, the ACC Network, etc., which would are multi-school versions of The Longhorn Network. In fact, with Texas joining the SEC, the Longhorn Network will go away.
RSN's have primarily been focused on professional sports and that's normally what it is mean in the Pay TV industry when you say RSN.

JefferMC -- yeah, the Longhorn Network is unique in this respect. it's not a conference sports network, nor is it a professional sports network. probably ought to have it's own category. <G> and as you note it is going away when Texas joins the SEC -- but that's on down the road a bit, and there's lots of UT sports to be watched between now and then!
