roku audo dropouts

The DirecTV streaming app on my Roku Ultra drops the audio every 710 seconds or so.  We have 270Mbps bandwidth available.  The issue does not occur when viewing DirecTV streaming on a PC or mobile device.  None of the other apps on the Roku device have this issue.  I rebooted the Roku as well as experimented with all the available audio options on the device.

Is your audio being fed into a receiver or directly into the TV?

You could also go to your Roku audio settings and try different settings under "Stream Audio Format", and "Digital Output Format".

First, it's actually every 10 seconds.  I have tried every audio option on the Roku and it still has the audio drop outs.  I have a Yamaha receiver and have tried every audio option there with no change.  As all other apps on the Roku have no audio issues, I'll try de-installing and re-installing the DirecTV app.  I can't think of anything else at this time.

Have you tried sending your audio directly, from your Roku, to your TV instead of your Yamaha, to see if it clears up?

Make sure you have Roku OS v11. This version fixed the audio drops that surfaced ~2 months ago. There was a recent post about Roku Ultra (3 devices) where @MrKlaatu was able to fix them by doing this:

"I tried something else, and it may have worked.  ... What I have tried before is tuning off LEVELING (Asterisk as a show is playing on DirectTV Stream) and setting it to Off.  But the chips and distortion continued.  What I did THIS time was change that setting, immediately log out of DirectTV Stream, and restarted the Roku.  (Like rebooting a PC after certain changes.)  Amazingly, it seems to have worked - SO FAR.  I will let you know how it goes."

Hope this helps - post here https://forums.directv.com/conversations/watching-directv-stream/audio-unstable-on-roku/62d9ed48521a9257946c79c3

I have found that switching to stereo output on the Roku Ultra stops the dropouts.  The device is running v11.0.0 build 4193-46.  Switching to stereo is a non-starter as I will not give up surround sound on the device just to stop audio dropouts on the Roku app.  None of the other apps on the Roku Ultra have this audio issue including Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, etc.  I'm sure that sending the audio directly to the monitor will not have dropouts as the monitor is only a stereo device.

Did you try what I shared in my previous post @ibwalkn ?

Leveling was turned off already so I turned it on, logged off, rebooted the Roku Ultra, launched DirecTV app, logged in and the audio did not drop.  However, leveling also eliminated dynamic audio range for all apps on the Roku.  I found that swiching leveling off while watching DirecTV caused the audio drops to come back.  So to me, that is not a solution as it impacts sound quality in a big way by eliminating dynamic range in the audio stream.  To me, leveling seems like another workaround like switching to stereo only but does not provide me what I should have from the Roku device and DirecTV app, audio dynamic range and surround sound.

I contacted support and reported specifically what the issue is, the workarounds and their drawbacks.  Thank you all for your feedback and help in this matter.  To restate, the issue is as follows:

The DirecTV app on Roku Ultra will drop the audio about every 10 seconds momentarily.  The problem does not occur on any other app on the device.  The workarounds are:

1) Set the Roku to stereo mode in the Roku settings for audio.  That eliminates the audio dropouts but also eliminates surround sound.  Since this is a global setting, it is no good.

2) While viewing the DirecTV Roku app, change the audio to leveling.  That eliminates dynamic audio range and is not a good compromise either as the same volume level is no good for movies, etc.

The support person assured me that my information will be passed to the technical team.  Who knows what they will do but at least they may be informed.

I've been having the same issue. My audio out goes to a SONY 5.2 channel amp. I've noticed that setting to Stereo from surround sound works for me too, but the leveling solution does not. Now I am constantly going to that Audio Roku menu when I switch sources, a royal pain you-know-where.
I am also looking for where to post another DIRECTTV audio issue where the audio either becomes loud and distorted or is in only one channel seemingly randomly after playing for a while, like for a baseball game. Changing the channel and going back fixes it, but man, this is annoying!

Since no other app has this issue on the Roku, I hope the DIRECTTV app development team addresses these audio issues at some point... soon.

I am also experiencing the exact same issue with a Denon Receiver. The switch to stereo fixes it but I also will not be satisfied with that “fix”.

Ditto...come on Directv, you need to solve this problem with an update to your app. I also do not have this issue on any other Roku app. Just you. FYI, HDMI directly from Roku to Sony receiver with TV set on bitstream and audio and video going directly to TV. Dolby Digital on your app is the issue. Just switched from satellite to the Roku app today, now using the same input on the receiver that I was using for the Directv satellite receiver with no audio dropouts when I was using the satellite receiver. Please, please, please fix this.

I don't think DirecTV cares about their app on ROKU when their solution is to sell their own box.  Prove me wrong!
