Wrong Local Channels Zip Code 39571

I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in a city called Pass Christian.

Our ZIP code is 39571, which is also my billing address.

The local channels that are being displayed automatically are from New Orleans which is over 50 miles away.

All cities and zip codes around me, including ones that are closer to New Orleans than me are receiving the correct local channels out of Gulfport and Biloxi.

This is obviously a glitch in the DirecTV system, however phone customer service is unable or unwilling to resolve this for me.

They are saying it is based on my billing address and that it is generated automatically and they cannot change it.

By comparison YouTube TV and Hulu live TV both show the correct local channels for my zip code.

I am switching to DirecTV stream because YouTube TV lost our local ABC channel.

Actually local channels are derived from a combination of a customer billing zip code and IP address. Essentially the IP address a customer is assigned must match their billing zip code to receive the local channels available in that area. Your ISP determines the IP address that is assigned to your location.

What device are you using? Have you verified where your IP address has been assigned by your ISP? You can do some testing by going to https://www.iplocation.net/

My IP is listed as Long Beach Mississippi.

The ISP is Cable One/Sparklight.

Long Beach Mississippi ZIP code is 39560.

If you look up local channels on DirecTV stream using 39560 it has the correct local channels.

Therefore it is not being based on the IP and instead is being based on the billing zip code which is what customer service told me.

Roku, iOS, Android.

Whether I am on Wi-Fi or cellular, or logging in from a different city I'm always receiving local channels from New Orleans.

And not that it matters too much but I'm a network administrator, so I understand a little bit about IP addresses and whatnot.

Here's a screenshot from what is my ip.com

New Orleans locals are the correct ones for you zip code 39571. That's what Directv stream gives you for your zip code. U didn't plug you zip code into their website before u ordered service? https://www.directv.com/stream/channel-lineup/

Yes I realize those are the channels that are listed with DirecTV as being my locals but what I am saying is those are incorrect and there is an issue within the DirecTV system.

Both YouTube TV and Hulu Live both offer the correct local channels for my area.

Change your billing zip code to one of those cities nearby that displays the correct locals lol. Here is a link to their live chat. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure you have ad blockers disabled. U can also contact them on twitter at directvhelp--I find them to more helpful there.

Did you ever get this resolved?  I have the exact same issue with my locals in the 62863 area.  DirectTV shows this area as Terre Haute but it is not.  It is really Evansville, IN.

Yes LOL but not in the way you would think or hope.

Basically DirecTV said they will only use the zip code that is on my billing address.

They would not use my IP address, and would not or were unable to manually change it to the correct zip code that I needed.

I even had a friend sign in, in the correct City, and then try to set a new home location, but it did not work.

I had to ask that friend to use their credit card which had a billing address in the correct city, and then I had to set up an automatic payment from my bank to pay that friend each month.

The funny thing is, I switched to DirecTV Stream because YouTube TV had lost all these channels, but then they got them back a day later!

I'm probably going to switch back to YouTube TV to avoid all of this hassle. YouTube had my correct local channels and a great lineup for less money.

How did I contact who? DirecTV?

I called and spoke to multiple Representatives over the course of a couple of hours and then I also spoke with a representative here on the forums.

Whatever the issue is, DirecTV Stream has it wrong in their system for my area. Period.

Like I've said a few times already, and I told these representatives and higher ups, YouTube TV and Hulu Live have the correct local channels in my area, for my billings zip code.

Just curious, @zackdadams , do you happen to live north of Diamond Head, in Hancock County, MS?

Even if you don't, that may be the issue.  Your zip code extends into Hancock County, MS, which is considered part of the NOLA DMA.  DMAs that split zip codes are a royal pain to get right.

Here's a DMA map:

https://thevab.com/storage/app/media/Toolkit/DMA_Map_2019.pdf

Here's the ZIP code map for 39571:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/PASS+CHRIS,+MS+39571/@30.4020642,-89.4953481,11.21z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x889c21de323154c9:0x8e922ef77c719588!8m2!3d30.410662!4d-89.2657266

Note the bump into Hancock County.
