Current Solution for Receiving Off Air Channels

Is there a current solution for receiving off air channels other than adding an antenna to get them.  We lost CBS a few weeks ago and I would like to have it back.  But if I just add an antenna I have to switch to plain tv to watch it and cannot record to the DVR.  A couple of years ago Direct TV offered a solution to their customers but that is no longer available.  Nice of AT & T to refund us a whole $25, but that doesn't make up for never having it.    Thanks in advance.

Using an OTA antenna is the easiest and cheapest option.

If you stream, see if locast is available in your market.  locast is a streaming service that allows you to watch LOCAL stations.

You can also stream from the networks app (CBS has a fee, NBC & ABC do not).

FYI:  The one-time bill credit is $20, not $25.  You'll have to log onto your account to claim it.

As you say, only with the Local Channel Connector , or its predecessor the AM21 off-air tuner.

There is a device called a Local Channel Connector that will plug into some Genie servers, I think this is the solution you are referring to. But it never became generally available and most people who tried to get one from directv have failed. They are often on ebay for $70-80.

What receiver do you have?

Thanks for your response.  The local channel connector is what I was referring to.  My receiver is model HR54/200.  I do have an antenna connected to the tv and can get the station I usually watch.  I was just hoping for a way to record to the dvr since there are several things I used to record every week.

I've been on the phone now for 43 minutes (most of that time on hold) with AT&T DirecTV, whoever they are now, UVERSE, and they have absolutely horrible customer service.  We were sent one of those antennas to pick up our local channel 2, WFMY (CBS) and it doesn't work.  They won't send a technician out to install it properly and the whole onus is put on us, the customer.  This is THEIR problem, this war with TEGNA and we pay for this channel.  We have been refused a credit on our bill and the only option they've given us is to call back when I get home for someone to walk us through the antenna installation again.  I'm now on the phone with a supervisor to see what our options are.  (We did get a credit finally) but I wish we had better options for receiving and watching television.  DirecTV used to be better before AT&T took over.  I'm not a happy customer.

That is interesting because I was told they no longer have an antenna - they said they offered it a couple of years ago but not now.  So they offered me a whole $25 rebate for no longer receiving the channel.   I agree that Direct TV service was much better and their customer reps even spoke English.

Oh, they sent us an antenna last week but refused to give us a credit on our bill at that time.  The antenna instructions are confusing;  you have to mount the stupid thing in a window and hook up all these wires then the instructions for scanning channels didn't work.  I resent being sent an antenna with the work falling to us when we're paying them for our television service.  They should come out and do this for us.  It's an inconvenience and a pain in the butt.  This is their fault, not ours, and they should fix it.

If  you are in a city where the service is available, use locast to stream your locals.

I purchased an antenna, but that does not allow me to record anything from CBS on my dvr or to pause a program or anything like that.  You have to select your tv to watch it thru and it is just like watching tv without having Direct TV.  If that is what they sent you and you were told to attach it to the antenna port on your tv, you need to go into your tv settings and scan for channels.  Then to watch the channels you have to select tv and not Direct Tv for the input.  I am curious where you are from that you were furnished with an antenna and I had to buy one.  I am in Michigan.

I'm in North Carolina.  The first lady I talked to last week asked for our Zip Code so she could see what we were "eligible" for, so I guess it depends on where you live, which is crazy.   And yes, if we ever get the antenna to work, I'm not happy that we can't record anything on our dvr and we'll have to change settings to watch shows on that particular channel.

Well isn't that interesting.  Seems to be if they offer it to one state they should offer it to all.   By the way - the antenna I purchased says to put it in a window, but the reception with it in my patio door is 0.  I moved it about two feet over on the wall next to the patio door and have great reception.  It just looks like I have a plain black rectangle hanging on my wall!  I can supposedly paint it to match the wall though.

I guess I'll try sticking the thing on a wall then.  I'm sure that'll look great.....big piece of black plastic on the wall, wires all hanging down..... LOL

I agree that whatever they offer they should offer it to everyone, not depending on where you're located.

The LCC is only available in areas that have lost a local channel due to a retransmission dispute.

The antenna that goes with it is an indoor antenna that will pick up only those stations that are relatively close. If you are in a weak signal area you would need to install an outside antenna and Directv won't help you with that.
