Complex situation. The TV converts everything to 1080p. But the original signal does not change, HD channels are going to be 720p or 1080i. The only true 1080p is going to be from a handful of pay-per-view channels. Very few (read "none") of the regular broadcast channels are originated in 1080p. this is nothing to do with directv.

The channels determine what resolution they use but mostly it is 1080i.
