Directv mobile
I live in San Jose, California and was in Arizona visiting my son at college and was trying to watch a local channel (San Jose) while in Arizona but it wouldn't let me as it gave me error message:
"your phone must be connected to the same network as your receiver to start a show on your TV"
I don't remember how but when i was fiddling with my cellphone while in directv app it was asking me about setting up my receiver to my phone or something like that and I needed some information on the back of the receiver to input but of course I couldn't do that since I was in Arizona.

Hi there, this is an issue because you have selected the wrong category on the top of the DIRECTV app. You have accidentally selected "Watch on TV" instead of streaming the channel on your phone. Please switch categories on your device and the message should not persist. Btw welcome to AT&T COMMUNITY FORUMS!

Right as DTV has dropped streaming from the Genie when outside of the home network a year or so ago, you can log into your account to watch the available content.

If you need information from the back of the receiver such as the serial number or access card number or RID you can find this information online under the "My Equipment" section.

so thanks as I now did click on "Live TV Streaming" and then went to browse and got the channel and clicked on "WATCH" and then it says "Watch TV" and it says "Program was sent to your receiver" and I hit OK. and it took me back to the previous screen.
now at the top it says "Watch on Phone" and then "this show is not available to watch right now"

Yes some channels can be watched on your device while others REQUIRE a DIRECTV receiver to be connected to the Internet you are on in order to work.
