low resolution issues
keep getting notices, intermittently, that there's an issue with HD resolution and I can continue watching in low resolution, seems to only happen on sports channels (espn, nfl etc). checked connections and site line for dish with no issues.

That’s most likely an alignment issue. ESPN is on satellite 99 while NFL is on satellite 103 so both don’t come in well. I suggest you go to Menu, Settings, Satellite, and View Signal Strength. From there, document signals of 101 (takes a moment for transponders to populate with a number/signal). Then, press the ‘+’ button at the top right corner to be sent to 99 (ca). Document these signals and do the same for 99 (cb), 103 (ca), and 103 (cb). Post back here your signals from all five satellites.
A few other questions, what is the receiver model and do you have other receivers with this issue? Error code specifically?
