Go to the DIRECTV app, click on ‘Browse for TV’ , click on the Remote figure to the far top right of the screen, select ‘Receiver’, and click on the receiver that you are trying to control. This can easily be found by looking at the receiver name or the four last digits of the RID. Next, go back and select ‘Remote Control.’ If you followed correctly you should be able to control the TV. If the remote control option is still grayed out, be sure that your phone and DIRECTV receiver are connected to the same network/WiFi.

Have you downloaded the app from your phones app store? Not sure if it is a separate app or part of the mobile app.

You don’t program the phone, remote capability is built into the Directv app. Your phone and receivers must be connected to your home network.
