Audio prob with DirecTV Stream app on Roku
The DirecTV Stream app has a serious audio problem on Roku devices. I've experienced it on four different Roku + stream sticks and the Roku forum is full of complaints and questions. The problem is clearly unique to the DirecTV app. Audio will suddenly drop in volume to nearly inaudible or get a lot of static in the audio stream just at random. Occasionally it will come back on its own after a time, but changing stations appears to fix it. It's terribly annoying to have to switch channels and switch back--often several times within a program hour.
Fix the app to work properly on RokuOS or folks are going to get fed up and switch to YouTubeTV or HuluLive.

I know it costs a lot to change the device. But so far with Roku Sound Bar, no problem.

I am experiencing the exact same problem with DStream audio via Roku. Changing channels is annoying and is very inconvenient when watching live sports. What is DStream and Roku doing to fix this issue?

I just bought a Roku Ultra 4802 model and I don't have any audio issues. I have the Roku connected to my TV via HDMI and the audio goes from my TV to AVR via optical connection.

I have this same issue. New to directv stream. Bought two brand new Roku Ultra's. Works almost perfectly, but sound randomly drops pretty drastically. I've tested everything listed above to troubleshoot but am still experiencing this in both tvs.

Just signed up for the free trial today and have the same issue. I see it's been going on for at least a year. For that reason, I'm out.

I post this hoping the additional information can help DIRECTV engineers identify and fix the unique audio problems previously described in this thread.
I steam DIRECTV via a ROKU 3810 stick connected directly to the stream box HDMI port of an Onkyo TX-NR777 surround sound receiver. The receiver is configured for 7.1 surround sound.
The ROKU stick consistently reports WiFi signal strength “Excellent” and internet download speed “Good (95 Mbps)” The reported speed varies from time to time but is never less than ~60Mbps). I recently changed ISP’s, upgrading the modem and router. I believe we can eliminate any potential WiFi or cabling issues.
We stream almost all the popular services with sound enabled (Auto settings). Audio works as expected with the exception of two specific DIRECTV issues:
1. When watching live TV, the audio occasionally becomes a combination of distorted, soft and/or loud. The quick workaround is to restart the steam using the ROKU skip back 30 second button. I guesstimate this problem occurs perhaps once in 5-10 hours of viewing.
2. When watching content from “My Library”, the audio consistently drops for an intrusive fraction of a second every 8 seconds. The only workaround that works for me is to change ROKU setting: Settings/Audio/Audio mode/Stereo (vs Auto)
This eliminates the audio dropouts with the penalty that all audio is downgraded to two channels by replacing the Auto DD+, DTS-HD option.
Switching the setting back after watching DIRECTV MyLibrary content takes an annoying few seconds to restore the surround sound.
These bugs are not to the point I’m ready to switch services although others may. I hope the additional info helps with a fix.

There are no engineers located here, and your post will never get to them. This is just an open community forum of subscribers and users sharing ideas and experiences. Your best shot is to provide the help reps with the info at Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks for your expert community support and the feedback bcbsncjlj.
I hope you can forgive that I come at this through the slightly cynical lens of a guy who has managed tech support operations.
A major value of this community thread is that it documents multiple users having persistent problems that neither the community nor support desk contacts have resolved.
Support desk performance metrics often penalize case escalations above a certain % threshold, sometimes with unintended consequences. I can’t say that this is the case at DIRECTV but I am willing to gamble just a little time in the belief that the management of a company caring about brand value and customer satisfaction not only manages the numbers but keeps a watchful eye on their community forums, if only from behind the scenes. Someone there may decide to act and if not, at least I gave it a shot.

The best way to get your complaints made known is to use their social media platforms on Twitter and Facebook to voice your complaints as they are more responsive and will most likely get a response from a rep.

I am getting very frustrated with the Directv sound issues with Roku devices that I am looking cancel my service and move to another streaming service. I have tried multiple Roku devices with the same results. I have upgraded my network and increased my speed to 300 MPS and still with the same result. The sound randomly drops out, or the volume drops or it becomes static. Switching to another channel & back only solves the problem temporarily and ruins my viewing. I need this solved or you will lose me as a customer, just like it appears you may be losing others

I read one of the posts that allude to this sound issue being resolved by the following Roku settings:
Settings/Audio/Streaming audio format to Dolby
Settings/Audio/Digital output format/Custom - Dolby
I am going to make these setting changes to see if this resolves the problem.
If not, then I am going to make the switch
I love my Roku devices more than I love Directv as I have too many options to replace Directv
