DirecTV Android app always says that there is no network connection when there is a connection

When starting the DirecTV app on any Android-based device (i.e., tablet, smartphone, TV, etc.) the app claims there is no network connection even though live TV is playing behind the message box. Within about a minute or five (yes, it can take that long), the app finally figures out the error of its ways and that it is connected to the internet and the message goes away and everything works.

It would be nice if the developers could address this annoyance as it really does not accurately represent the status of the app nor the network the device is connected. From what I have read this has been an issue for at least the last five years. As a programmer, this is a stupid problem and should be fixed in the next release.

This often occurs because of a weak internet connection, @jbhall56inMN. Please try restarting your router, as this can fix many issues. Here are also some tips to improve your streaming experience: Improve your DIRECTV streaming experience | DIRECTV Support Rhyan, DIRECTV Community Team

As a network engineer that makes absolutely no sense in this day and age.

There is a strong connection to the WiFi access point, in fact I can be right on top of it with any of my Android devices and observe this behavior. Any other apps on the device work perfectly fine on the WiFi. I only observe this behavior with the DirecTV app and no other.
