DirecTV Stream Channel Up & Down Buttons Not Working on AppleTV App
This issue came about 3-4 days ago. I'm using DirecTV Stream Version 4.0.31 on AppleTV 4K (Model A2169 32GB, the latest version) with tvOS Version 15.4.1.
While watching TV, I used to be able to go to the next channel by clicking Right (channel up) or Left (channel down) button. All of a sudden, it stopped working, along with the "Up" button for previously watched channel list.
- When I close and restart the app, the problem still remains.
- The problem goes away when I reboot the AppleTV device. But the issue comes back as I continue to watch TV or navigate through channels (usually within an hour).
- Back and Down button still works.
- "Slide" on AppleTV remote still works for channel up/down - but that means I can only use AppleTV remote (which is not very comfortable to use, and "Slide" is quite tricky to operate)
This is really annoying, as:
- I have to go back out to Guide even to move 1 channel up or down
- I don't want to reboot the device every hour
I am not 100% sure, but it seems like it has something to do with memory management. When I click right or left button, the device blinks, but nothing happens on the application side. I also observed that when too many channels were skipped (i.e., up or down), the DirecTV Stream app would just crash.
I wonder if the current version was released about 3-4 days ago.
Please let me know if there are remedies for this issue (other than having to reboot the machine).

Agree on this "- "Slide" is quite tricky to operate"
If you're not using the AppleTV remote, which remote are you using? Sorry, couldn't figure it out by reading your post.

@GTyz Great question. My LG OLED TV remote is automatically connected to AppleTV.
In addition, there is a way to "add" remote controls to AppleTV. So, I added my old DirecTV remote (which is great).
Under "Remote Control" menu (on AppleTV), there is a way to program key functions, and AppleTV learns them in no time.
But, with this bug, left/right/up click stopped working. Only the down button works.

Have you tried to pair the Apple TV remote with your TV again? This will help us to refresh the communication between your devices to grant the DIRECTV STREAM App working.
If not, please follow the steps:
1- Point your remote at your Apple TV. Make sure that the remote is about 8cm from the Apple TV.
2- Press and hold Back (or Menu) and Volume Up for 5 seconds.
3- If asked to do so, place your remote on top of your Apple TV to finish pairing.
Let us know how it goes.

@DIRECTVhelp Thank you for your quick response. I tried it but I do not think it’s a pairing issue.
For one, it is happening with all remote controls, not just AppleTV remote, and two, I have this issue with all of my latest AppleTV 4K. Interestingly, an older version of AppleTV 4K is free from this issue.
I hope that it helps. Please let me know what else I could try.
Thank you.

We can check for updates for our App, Apple TV automatically updates DIRECTV STREAM app when new versions are available. If you disabled automatic updates, please follow these steps:
1. Go to the App Store.
2. And find DIRECTV STREAM to check for available updates.
Please let us know if this issue is happening in other devices different than Apple TV.
We will be waiting for your updates, thank you!

@DIRECTVhelp Thank you for your response.
As I mentioned in my original post, I am using DirecTV Stream Version 4.0.31, which I think is the latest version.
Are you saying that I should resort back to the previous version?
* How do I turn "off" automatic update?
* If I re-install the app, wouldn't it be the latest version anyway?
Please let me know.
Thank you.

You can't go back. There is no previous version to get. A reinstall will only give you the current version in the Google Play Store.

As we know, the channel up/down button is working on the AppleTV remote on the DIRECTV STREAM app, may we know if the LG remote is experiencing the same issue on other streaming platforms?

@DIRECTVhelp Thank you for your response, Alejandro.
Channel up/down works with AppleTV remote, but only with the "slide" option. "Click", which used to be easier and more convenient, stops working within 1 hour of reboot of AppleTV.
The weirdest thing is that it works if I reboot the device; then "clicks" stop working. Not just for right/left for channel up/down, but "up" click for previous channel list as well.
When that happens, it happens with "all" remote controls; AppleTV remote, LG TV remote, and old DirecTV remote that my AppleTV learned.
I have absolutely have no issue with other apps on the device. It only happens with DirecTV Stream app.
And when I click those buttons, AppleTV blinks - acknowledging that there is a signal coming through - but nothing happens on the application side.
Since it works properly for about 1 hour after rebooting, I think it is a memory management issue.
I hope this helps.
Thank you!

@willow1210 I have the DTV Remote for the STB as well and I just paired it with the AppleTV and I'm trying to replicate the issue you reported (up, down, left, right). Reading through the original post, it seems this started to happen with the latest release. Stay tuned.

@willow1210 I wasn't able to replicate it, I've been using it for the past couple of hours.
I'll keep using it and will report back. The main difference is between our AppleTV models, yours 4K mine 3rd G.

@GTzy That makes sense. I have 2 latest versions of AppleTV 4K and 1 3rd generation. The bug is only present in the latest models.
