Directv Stream on Google TV

Just to make sure, are you trying to use a Google TV Chromecast? If so, we can confirm to you that the DIRECTV STREAM app is compatible with:

    • Chromecast (2nd generation and higher)
    • Chromecast Built-in TV (select models)

The app is not available (for unclear reasons) on Android TV (renamed Google TV).  It is doubtful this is for technical reasons - their own device runs Android TV (with the app built in and not available separately).  The assumption some of us make is that there is some business/contractual reason they've never made an Android TV version generally available, but there has never been any public statements made to explain it.  All of that means that no one not inside DirecTV would know (and the reps that post here are very unlikely to know and if they did, they couldn't say).

The comments about Chromecast are referring to casting to a Chromecast device (which as far as I know all Android TV/Google TV devices also are).  So you could cast from a phone or tablet (with a few restrictions - as far as I know, playback of recorded content still doesn't work when cast), but there isn't a native app.

there is no guide tab on the top bar of my home screen and the guide on the remote does not take me to my local tv guide for times and programs. The error message says that the cable box is turned off.  There is no cable box because this is a Google smart tv and connects to directv stream via wifi.  What am I doing wrong?

If you are using anything other than the DirecTV streaming device, buttons like “guide” belong to the native system (in your case, Google TV) and will take you to that system’s guide, not the DirectTV Steam app guide. 

If you have gotten to the DirecTV Stream home screen (using whichever of the up or down keys works for the Android TV version of the app), there should be a “guide” link.  What do you see on that screen?
