On several, if you select the currently playing program (using the OK button in the center of the D pad on the DirecTV streamer, the center button on a FireTV, and so on) , it will bring up an overlay which includes at the bottom a CC/Audio button. Selecting that will offer options for controlling Closed Captioning and optional languages (where the choice "Default" is generally English). On iOS, selecting the program offers an icon at the top that looks like a "speech balloon" - selecting that will offer similar choices. I don't have other devices handy, but I assume they all offer something similar to those.
