Out Of Home Streams
It is seeming to me that the Directv stream service is the same as their satellite minus the dish…. I have loved everything about this streaming service so far but now I’m a little frustrated and confused. Watching on the platform at home location is just fine. Watching at location B is not fine. My phone will get the updated local channels but my FireTV will not. My location is updated on the stick, and obviously they would know my IP for that device. Why does Directv stream not update to local channels on smart devices other than a phone or tablet? I was using FuboTV before and it would update on all devices regardless which was great! I also saw another post here that said YouTube TV does the same thing. So, Directv… what’s going on why can’t you do it?
I did of course ask support and tech support about this and their reply was… well confusing… not really an answer just that you have to use your phone. The person was nice but not very helpful in answering my question. Does anyone here know why Directv stream has this limitation? Would getting one of their fancy streaming boxes solve this?

Restart the Firetv. If that doesn't work uninstall and reinstall the app.

With your cell phone, it uses GPS to determine the device location. GPS knows exactly where you are located. Your streaming device uses your IP address for device location.

The behavior for different devices when at alternate locations has varied a lot over the years. The official "rules" for what was supposed to happen have generally not been stated, and the ones that have haven't been consistent. And the technology they've used to try to implement locality has also been varied (and for devices without GPS has been generally unreliable).

Chatting with them again today I learned that it just isn't a feature for their own streaming box and I assume that carries over to their other apps for other TV devices. So it seems that just the phone does it though it is odd it's only the phone. You are able to tell location through an IP address, maybe not as precise but certainly the correct county or region for local channels.
It is becoming more clear to me that their service is pretty much their satellite service just without the dish. I wish they would implement a location-based channel line-up for TV devices as they have for devices with location services. I have yet to find a streaming service that checks all the boxes, either missing channels, poor quality streams, or missing specific features like this here for location-based local stations. DTV stream has come the closest, but now it may be the time to decide if missing a few channels is worth having the accurate local channels.
