Sending Audio from DirecTV Stream to Airplay (Sonos Speakers)
I'm playing an NFL game via DirecTVStream on my iPad, but when I send the audio via Airplay to my Sonos speakers, I can hear the audio fine, but the pause button remains on the middle of the iPad screen, along with the description of the program (so it is unwatchable essentially). How do I send to Airplay/Sonos speakers without this happening? The only way the screen is normal is by playing through the horrible iPad speakers. Are you telling me if you watch DirecTV Stream on a mobile device, you are STUCK with the device speakers? Please say that isn't so?
This clearly is something that DirectTV can fix if they want to -- otherwise I wouldn't hear the audio at all on my Sonos speakers. Nor am I sending the picture to another device -- just the audio (so it shouldn't be a rights/licensing issue). Shouldn't this work? If not, why not?

Hi @pcire, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We're looking to improve our customer experience. We'll be taking your feedback about this issue, so our specialized teams can take a closer look into this Sonos functioning in our different services such as NFL games. As a friendly suggestion, we recommend you to contact Sonos support team to check if this is related between the permissions enabled in your iOS device and your Sonos device.

Hi Julian:
I'm sorry to advise that this is definitely NOT an NFL issue, or a Sonos issue. It is definitely a DirectTV Stream issue with Airplay. ANY program I choose (movie, regular broadcast, NFL, or news or cable TV channel) to Airplay from my iPad (or iPhone) via DirectTV Stream will Airplay the audio to a Sonos speaker (BUT the picture on the iPad does not clear from the giant pause button in the middle of the screen; the program information (i.e. CNN Anthony Bordain, S7 E1; some outline of what looks like a TV monitor at the top of the screen; the word "airplay" above the giant pause button; and the picture is dimmed slightly). In other words, this is not being handled correctly by DirectTV Stream when audio is sent via Airplay from the device. It sends the audio, but then does not return to the normal video.
So don't consider this a Sonos issue (Sonos simply accepts Airplay like any device that accepts Airplay). This is a DirecTV Stream issue sending Airplay to ANY Airplay compatible device from the mobile device streaming DirecTV Stream service.
So can you confirm whether:
1. This is intentional on the part of DirectTV Stream?
2. If not intentional, what is the fix?
3. If it is intentional -- why? Is it some licensing issue with Apple?
Thanks.

Following-up on this. I can't imagine no one else has tried to send audio via Airplay to speakers from their mobile device? Any word on what the issue is here?

A question is whether other video services (apps) on the iPad behave differently. My only experience with AirPlay is to send both the audio and video to another device (TV). When I do that, regardless of the app it basically blocks video on the iPad. I'm guessing the Sonos offers itself as an audio only target - true?

To answer Jrandomuser -- YES, all other video services behave correctly. AirPlay audio works perfectly with all my streaming apps, including: Hulu, HBOMax, Netflix, PrimeVideo and AppleTV+.
The problem is ONLY with DirecTV Stream. I should add that on the Reddit DirecTV forum, other people have indicated they have the same issue -- only with DirecTV Stream. Weird that DirecTV has not responded officially here again - after Julian's initial questions.

I have this problem too. I am an IT guy. The problem is within the DirecTV iOS code. Any other app on my iPhone is able to cast AUDIO ONLY to my Sonos speaker. But DirecTV app has the bug, where the screen is obscured by the word "AirPlay". Clearly, the app is sending AUDIO AND VIDEO to the Sonos speaker, where it should send AUDIO ONLY. Hey DirecTV....Can we get a little love on this?
