Sony Bravia XBR - no app in goggle play story

Migrated from my DIRECTV sat to DIRECTVstream today.  Surprised to find NO app in the google store....whats with that?

It's possible to cast from your phone to the SONY TV, but that is very inconvenient.  The image does not always scale to full screen.

Think twice about DIRECTV stream if you have a SONY Bravia XBR.

You should have checked the Supported Devices information at the DirecTV Stream website. But the bottom line is that native TV Apps are generally garbage. Witness all of the issues posted here with the Samsung DirecTV Stream App. You'll have a much better experience with a $30 Roku or FireStick.

Your first attempt at fixing this should be to clear the Google Play Store and Google Play Services cache. Additionally, you can uninstall and reinstall updates on the Google Play Store. Also, make sure you are running the latest software available for your Android device.

As far as I know DirecTV has its own products and often announces compatibility on different topic sites. If you even take for example https://www.bestessaytips.com/review_essay.php review on Stream App, you can see that it's not only you who's had this happen and it's written about it everywhere. You just need to double-check all the nuances beforehand. You choose a laptop by its features and a furniture by its size. It's the same with DirecTV. They have their own products and I believe they have done everything possible to ensure that you can use the network without any problems.

Clearing and reinstalling updates on Google Play Store and Google Play Services is a good way to fix this issue. Additionally, you can uninstall the current app version on your Android device and install a new one. Make sure you are running the latest software available for your devices!

Ok, you people are unbelievable.  I spoke to ATT  when they forced me off of my Uverse system for this.   They said it works with smart tv's.   The reality I was forced to make a change by them, and for all practical purposes, was lied to.  A few Samsung TV's is NOT the definition  of "smart tv's"  I  have three rokus, and will use one, but the interface is crap and I'm back to juggling multiple remotes again.  At least  I have 5 days to find another service.

Not supported is a choice by DirecTV.  Please quit acting like their hands are tied and there's nothing they can do.  All of the larger live tv streaming services have one. I actually side loaded an older version of the app that didn't.work due to a DirecTV software update

@SRB151   I have the Dtv stream app sideloaded onto my android tv device and it works fine. If you sideload the correct version it works.

Nevermind, since I just got on, I was within my 5 day trial.  As many of you have aptly pointed out, it was clear that DirecTV does not and in all probability will not support Sony tvs with Google tv android.  Easiest solution was to change to one of the many that does.  Enjoyed my time here, and good luck to all.

P.S.  The point never was that they promised support for Sony (customer service aside), or that they should change, it's their decision and their business.  It's just that, to me, alienating a very large group of television owners just because, seems like a very poor business decision.   Sorry you don't see it this way.

@PopinGlutin  I spent 45 minutes  on the phone with DirecTV during the cancellation,  there is no option.  As I said above, DirecTV  is the  ONLY live stream service that doesn't have a generic Google TV app.

@Ludwick577 Define inferior.  Right off the bat, this was a  HUGE step down from my Uverse, but the new bill of $137 for basic cable wasn't worth the difference.  I just completed my sign up with a competitor, more  channels, covered  all  of the same ones I'd have had here, longer cloud dvr,  and a lower price.

@bcbsncjlj I think your just trying to help (I hope), but I have 2 roku boxes, 2 suitable cell phones,  can get the box, etc.   Call me stubborn, but I doubt it would cost them much if anything to fix their app for generic Google TV, and I don't feel like loosing the  convenience  of one remote and no boxes.  BTW, for what it's worth, there is no "Sony OS"   It's Android TV/Google TV, just like every other google based smart tv.  LG is WebOS, and I think Samsung uses some Tizen  code  in their skin to  customize it, nut not sure.

I'm still amazed that  a DirecTV mod  or customer service rep doesn't just post a canned reply or an faq as  to  why they won't do it (if there is a reason), or, that  they're considering it working on it, etc.   Esp since this question  will  probably pick up as they drive more Uverse  and Directv sat customers off  their current platforms.

The vitriol from fanboys is really not necessary and over the top.

Tizen is actually yet another Linux-based OS - Samsung apparently didn't like Android enough or wanted something where they had more control, so they created their own frameworks and such.

Could DirecTV (and AT&T before them) create an Android TV app?  Obviously - people can sideload what they have (the FireTV app) and it works (I don't know if there are hiccups or not).  And they run their own device on Android TV (though their app for that is likely not generic enough to run as is on other Android TV platforms).

So why don't they?  It's a good question.  They actually had an Android TV app at one point, but it was limited to a single vendor's products (LeEco), who left the US market not long after it came out.  (The app became available in May 2017 and it went away in Sept 2017.)  There was a clear implication that there was a business arrangement involved, but even if LeEco owned that app so AT&T couldn't release it for other use, it doesn't explain why they haven't done one since, using a different code base (like their existing Android and FireTV apps).  The only thought I've come up with is that there is a (still in place) contractual restriction or something like that.  But they've never said publicly, and that is the sort of thing that companies generally don't disclose.  I had hoped (not that it impacts me personally) that if there was such a restriction, it impacted AT&T, and once the streaming service was part of a different company, it wouldn't apply.  But it's been 8 months or so since the spin off, which seems long enough for DirecTV to productize and release something they already have in a (at least close to) usable state.  So no clue.

As far as other platforms (like WebOS, XBox, PlayStation) - it's been a long time since a new platform was added.  I don't think AT&T was interested in devoting a lot of resources to the product's development.  There doesn't seem to have been a very clear strategic plan for the service - perhaps due to internal AT&T politics?  In any case, we've seen more enhancement in the product in 6 or so months under DirecTV than in years under AT&T (even if some of those enhancements likely were started under AT&T), so maybe good things will come.  I'd have a list of things (DVR functional enhancements, profiles, editable channel lists, some others) that I would put as higher priority than additional platforms, but given sufficient resources, they could do both.  And they might be working on things - companies generally don't disclose futures (especially in this case, since in the early days AT&T did on a few occasions, and when the promised changes didn't happen or happened much later than expected, it didn't go over well...)

@Jrandomuser   Thank you.  I would think that since 2017, enough had changed, but your explanation makes sense. Even Android TV is gone (technically, since they decided to revamp into Google TV, but I guess not.  And yes, ATT was always seemed to be doing things the hard way.  When I went to U-verse, it was a one way conversion, could never go back off the service for phone or internet at the time.  Not sure what the story is now.

Thanks again for your explanation, probably somewhere in there is what's going on.
