vacation use

I'm going on a trip and want to set my location to the new location and get local news. If I do that, will that affect my kid's use at home? Can I stream from Florida while they stream from Michigan?

They can stream from Michigan, yes. But, the local channels they receive in Michigan will be the ones you get in Florida as the home location was changed. If they use phones or tablets for DIRECTV STREAM in Michigan, then the local channels they get should be for their market.

I forgot to mention this in my first post. Also, once you change the home location, your kids in Michigan are only granted (3) simultaneous streams at once since they are considered an away location. In Florida, you are granted (20) simultaneous streams at the new “home” location.

If you are going to be back home and you only need a few devices concurrently using the DirecTV Stream in Florida (at most 3 devices total, as most 2 of which will be TV streaming devices) then you don't need to change your "home" location - instead leave home alone and you treat the devices in Florida as away from home.

As far as getting locals where you will be - mobile devices always get locals from where they are (assuming location service are turned on, because they have GPS).  For TV streamers, it is a little less certain.  If you use one of the DirecTV branded streaming devices (Osprey), they say to get the locals where you are, you should:

To get the local channels based on the zip code that you are located, please follow the steps.

1. Press Home on your remote.
2. Open Settings > General > System Summary.
3. Make sure your ZIP Code is correct.
4. Go to Location > Location Status and toggle OFF.
5. Press the red button on the side of your device to restart it.
6. Toggle your Location Status ON after you restart.

However, it is unclear if an analogous (if even possible) works with other brands of streaming devices.  (I would guess an Apple TV would get the correct locals if it has location services enabled - no idea for a Roku, FireTV, or commodity Android TV device.)
