Why does most of the audio on WNCN have no or nearly no center channel?

Most of the programming has virtually no center channel audio.  Occasionally commercials seem like they're okay, but most of the programming and network programming does not.  I also have an OTA tuner and I can switch between the two and verify that the OTA signal sounds perfectly normal but the DirecTV signal does not. It is almost like there's a processor somewhere with too low of input level and pushing it below a gate level.

Found the solution to this one myself. I noticed in the audio settings on the Gemini device it was set to surround. The other option is stereo. So I never thought about trying stereo. However, I think it's more of a digital pass through because when I switched it to stereo I got center channel and really good sounding Dolby Digital surround and I'm very happy.

This would be an issue with the audio levels that WNCN is sending to DIRECTV for broadcasting. directv is not in charge of fixing broadcasting issues such as audio or video glitches. Your best bet is informing both your local WNCN channel as well as DIRECTV to make them aware of the issue collectively. This way, they can coordinate the issue and hopefully look for a quick solution. If not, you can try a BBB complaint to make the issue more known as this goes to corporate.

So the last time I knew, DTV was receiving all of the local stations off an OTA site that was uplinked from North Raleigh.  So you are telling me that they are actually receiving a direct fiber feed of program from the station?

Do you have satellite or streaming service?

Streaming.  Now.  Used to have satellite.  Is there a difference?

I mean I know there's a difference. I mean a difference in the way that DirecTV is receiving the programming. There may be I just don't know. This is why I'm asking.

I thought I had found that the setting for stereo in the Gemini was actually a digital bypass, but I was wrong.  Turns out my receiver was fibbing and displaying what it was outputting not what it was receiving.  It truely was 2 channel PPM 24/48.  So I'm still having a problem with WNCN.

WNCN has terrible audio engineering. I hope you can convince someone at that station to actually pay attention. They're very sloppy in their on air standards.
