Wrong Local Channels on Apple TV

I’m having trouble getting the correct local channels when logging into the Stream app on my Apple TV.

Interestingly enough, when entering the zip code (95223) where the Apple TV is located into the local channel finder, it shows a drop down with Alpine and Calaveras. I think this is incorrect because the zip code is only in the Calaveras market.

Even though I’m still fully within the Calaveras area the app will only display the channels for Alpine. It’s my understanding that the Apple TV app chooses the local channels based on the location of the device.

The problem is this is a vacation home and not my primary billing address. Customer service wasn’t able to help and could only suggest changing my billing address, which isn’t possible.

Is there any way to force the app to switch to the correct media market?

I assume you are connecting via a router at your vacation home, correct? Using your phone via cellular, what locals do you get? That will tell you your location.

Correct, the Apple TV is connected to the homes internet.

Same thing happens on my phone via wifi or cellular. It gets the Reno area local channels, which is incorrect.

Hey @mh415, we want you to enjoy the right programming assigned to your area.

Please confirm how long ago you're getting the wrong local channels on your DIRECTV STREAM platform, and in the meantime, we recommend that you try resetting your Internet modem, sometimes the access to your local content might be affected by your internet settings.

We'll be waiting for your updates, we're here to help.

@DIRECTVhelp

It’s been happening for just a few days. I only recently signed up to try the service out because I’m thinking of switching from YouTube TV.

I’ve gone ahead and reset my modem and router to try to get a new IP address. Still no change.

I know that some zip codes were modified in April to comply with the new FTC DMA (Demographic Market Areas) changes and many subscribers were impacted, and you may be one also impacted. DirecTV Stream does not set DMA regions or control what locals are provided. It appears that you are in a split DMA areas with different locals. I would take it with support and confirm.

Thanks for the details, @mh415. We want you to stay with us, and enjoy the benefits DIRECTV STREAM offers.

Please check if the Location Service on the Apple TV is turned on. This is very important since the locals you get depend on this option being enabled or not. By turning on the location service, the local channels are determined by the device location. If this option is turned off, you'll receive the local channels from your billing ZIP code.

Let us know if this works.

@bcbsncjlj totally understandable, thanks for the insight. Xfinity and YouTube TV have this area comfortably within the Sacramento market so it’s interesting that DTV Stream does not.

@DIRECTVhelp turning off location services on the Apple TV and my iPhone both result in the error “Your location services setting is turned off, so you can’t watch programs until you go into your settings and turn it on”

Thanks for the accurate response, @bcbsncjlj

@mh415  As it was mentioned before, the Apple TV with DIRECTV STREAM get the local channels base on the current ZIP code. You'll get the channels available within the Out of Home Designated Market Area (Your current location) DIRECTV does not have control of the local channels in the areas. You can check the local channels on your current ZIP code.

We want to check ways to make this experience better for you. Let's meet in a Direct Message to take a closer look on this. Please check your DIRECTV Message Inbox (It's the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums)
