Longhorn Network - Just say 'No'

I greatly appreciate the value provided by AT&T in bundling tv/wireless/internet services.  Similarly, the bundling of channels allows customers to access a variety of programming at substantial savings.

However, occasionally, programming comes along that is so expensive and directed at such a narrow, niche market that it deserves to be left off of the programming options or ordered solely as an 'a la carte' option.  If the reports about the price tag  to cable providers  to offer the 'longhorn network' (by ESPN) are accurate, the only way it could be added to current bundled programming packages is at substantial cost to MANY people who have no interest in the programming.

Please AT&T, keep prices low, by either not offering or charging ONLY those who desire this programming option.

Thanks!

I saw a sidebar ad today that Rice (Houston) will be playing UT on 9/3 and to sign up for the channel now! Smiley Surprised

Yeah.  At this point the only major provider who has announced carriage of the Longhorn Network is Verizon FIOS as of September 1st.  There are also some small cable companies near Houston and in east Texas that have also announced carriage.  There may be a lot of UT fans who will be unable to see the game unless something changes next week.

I assume Verizon FIOS is being overwhelmed with cancellation notices since they announced carriage last week.  😉

I've been considering making the switch to U-verse from Cox; however, should AT&T add the LHN as part of their basic package---or even part of their sports package---I will not be making the switch.  I have also spoken with multiple people that have stated that they will drop AT&T if LHN is added to the basic package.  I guess the idea of having this network forced down their throats is not very appealing.

What will you do if Cox picked up the Longhorn Network?

U450 subscriber and frequent purchaser of movies, etc. I will not pay one penny to support UT. Period. Make it subscriber only? Fine. Bundle it with the U450 or U300 tier? No problem, I'll drop to a lower service level and make do with online services and sports bars to get my college football fix.

Ultimately, there will be a dividing line unless the channel is offered by subscription, as is appropriate. On the one side will be dish/cable/fiber carriers serving UT fans and on the other, carriers serving fans of A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston, TCU and SMU. The latter will have a much larger customer base today and especially tomorrow given UT's current student demographics, which favor soccer and cricket over American football.

We Texans are very stubborn and we have plenty of alternatives these days for our entertainment dollar. Choose wisely U-verse.

I am wondering if all of these new posters to this forum and thread are actually U-Verse subscribers or are they plants from other schools who do not want to see a channel devoted to the Texas Longhorns? This response and hatred for a channel that is not even on the air yet or even part of the U-Verse package is so weird and unreal.

I am from Missouri. I casually follow the Missouri Tigers football team, also part of the Big 12. If all I have to pay is 40 cents a month more for the Longhorn Network, which I will probably not watch, it does not matter to me. What is 40 cents? If one cannot afford 40 cents a month, then one should not be subscribing to any cable, digital, or satellite service.

I am sure there are plenty of Texas Longhorn fans all over the United States, not just in Texas, who would welcome a Longhorn Network.

In addition, someone who follows a Big 12 team might be interested in a particular Longhorn game if it means their own team winning the Big 12 or not, or going to a particular bowl game.

How long have you had this Facebook group? I see that you only have three members. I also checked your Facebook page, and saw that you are a Texas Tech supporter.

If the longhorn fans want to watch ut play, then let them pay for it.

Since the network is focused for one specific fanbase, then it should not be on a tier that other subscribers would have to pay for on their plan.

Cable tv is full of wasted channels, and we don't need another one.

Do not want in my basic lineup, and thats all that matters, for whatever reasons.

The channel is an abortion, zero content, extra costs, supports a rival, attempts at shady content, etc. ESPN looks a bit foolish in all this, UT would've been crazy not to sign on for a guaranteed $10M a year with ESPN taking all of the risk.

That said, all of the Longhorns I know think the channel is pretty laughable, because outside the 1 (2?) football game and a couple of basketball games, they will never attempt to watch it. There is little interest in non revenue sports, and whatever else they are putting on it. Had ESPN actually been able to ever show high school sports on the LHN, it would make a lot more sense...but that wont happen now that the NCAA said no.

How can it be viable with no one tuning in? Who would pay for advertising? If its a la carte, thats fine, but it shouldnt be in a basic package. Definitely will leave Uverse for another provider not forcing it on me. Tv service is tv service to me, not much real difference having had Dish and TWC in the past, and now Uverse.

Maybe I'm not a big loss to ATT, will be waiting to see what happens.

I have been a Uverse customer for 3 years. I will not pay for the LHN. If the LHN is added to my current plan, that is fine. Just know that I will not watch it. If my rates increase for  my selected service, I will cancel my service. Plain and simple.

I have yet to see one poster who has more than one or two posts who has come out against the Longhorn Network. I cannot remember any non-newbies, especially veteran posters, who have come out against this new channel.

I still maintain that the great majority of these people against the Longhorn Network are plants from other universities or even from other cable, digital, and satellite providers. Do most U-Verse subscribers even realize that there is going to be a Longhorn Network?

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am a U-verse subscriber as of March of 2010.  I am also a Texas Tech alumni.   I will drop U-verse all together if TLN requires me to spend one red cent more than I am already paying.  I do not see how this is not illegal with all the nonsense the NCAA says you can and can't do.

No it is not jealousy, I don't want a Texas Tech network either.  I would like a Big 12 Network.
