Loss of channels

AT&T has failed to properly prepare for the  anticipated end of contract negotiation with Nexstar - resulting in the loss of ABC station, a MAJOR network. This continues to happen, as in the past, when other channels were removed from the lineup - as your customers continue to pay increased costs in service. We set up another TV(purchased an antennae) that would give us this basic channel for the interim - assuming we will get the channel back at some time in the future!  I think it's time to contact other providers who can provide continuing service that we PAY for and don't get with AT&T.

  1. I got a measly $5 offered to me for the loss of two local channels since Independence Day.  I told that Indian woman to take that paltry sum and shove it!

You have to call and jump through the hoops to get an adjustment. You will be told all kinds of stuff by someone who does not speak English, the "customer service" is in India. I finally told her that "it should be soon" was unacceptable, was put on hold, was told I would get a $15 a month on-going credit. My contract is up in Sept. and I'm done with DTV after 16 years.

What does this have to do with internet service? You are in the wrong forum. Try posting in the applicable TV service forum.

What’s with the Nexstar disruption? Even though you mention channels are subject to change you offered customers the now blacked out channels. This constitutes an Implied Contract. You service is awful and now customers are missing out on local and national channels. It’s time to switch to a carrier that provides for and cares about its customers.

And how happy will you be when Nexstar, or another local affiliate, does the same thing with them?

All TV providers have in their terms channels are subject to change. This is because they don't own the channels so cannot forbid the channel owner from pulling the feed. So it is your terms of service, the contract, that allows for channels to change at any time. There is no contract that guarantees any specific channel will always be there or have any specific programming on it.

If no agreement is reached between nexstar & directv I will be unable to watch my regional nfl games on fox. Will I be able to watch these games on Sunday ticket even though ticket normally blacks them out?

Unfortunately not. Negotiations between TV provider and local affiliate does not change blackout rules of the NFL or any other sport. You will need to use a antenna to get the free broadcast of the local for any programming during the negotiations.

Realistically that is probably more than those channels cost per subscriber per month. Local negotiation does not entitle you to a huge discount for something has a free over-the-air broadcast. Doesn't matter where the agent is from, heritage, etc., that response was quite rude of you. They are not obligated to provide you any compensation as channels can change at any time. And it certainly is not the agent's fault for the negotiations. I would rather be patient through negotiations while they try to minimize any rate increase demanded by the local owner.

So take a breath and don't blow the situation out of proportion.

As explained, I am not an employee of AT&T/DirecTV, just an experienced customer. I don't like the negotiation situation, but I understand the reality that if the TV provider caves quickly, then we get that much more on our bill with the higher rates. All for a local channel or two.

I point out that though the total that is paid to the channel owner is a hefty sum, realistically it is a small amount per subscriber. So I do not agree with others who demand large discounts for what is only a small portion of their individual bill. And agents of course would have no influence on the negotiations themselves, or they wouldn't be on the phone taking calls. So I do fault those that lose their temper and berate someone who has no control over the situation and still is offering an available compensation.

In the end a couple locals cost individual customers a very low amount. DirecTV pays the channel owner for all subscribers, so that is a large amount there. A $1 increase here, a $2 increase there, it all adds up. This is why we are patient during the negotiations as we don't want the TV provider to cave. Nothing to do with how much they care, it is simple budgeting. We have plenty other channels to watch in the meantime. For those that feel more attached to the temporary missing channels, if they are within range I say use a antenna. Get the free broadcast without giving the channel owner more leverage to raise costs. Even call DirecTV to see if you can get a Local Channel Connector (LCC). I'll be glad when the LCC is fully launched so that it takes some wind out of the sail for these local affiliate owners. Personally I didn't go to pay TV for my already available free channels, but I get that is not the same for everybody.
