All TV providers go up as the cost of the channels goes up. Why should TV providers (and that includes us customers by way of our bill) keep paying higher rates for channels that are available over our airways for free? No provider is protected against these rates going up over the years as they don't own them. They have all gone through many negotiations and experienced channels pulling their feed as leverage.

I wish those that keep demanding channels be back on quick would pay the increased cost that the rest of us don't want to.

I have been unable to watch ABC channel 13  or cw channel14 its been over a week and should have been resolved.  How do you expect us to wait while you work it out, when others like dish and spectrum can give us what we are paying direct tv to provide us with

How about we go back to the days where people supplied a product and stood behind their product trying to always keep it the best and at a quality that would increase customers rather then loosing them? I guess in this new day we are all just satisfied with what we have and we never ask for more and are too understanding on things when we as the costumer could demand quality. AT&T has a large customer base that is made up of a majority of those that are ok with substandard service, internet that is spotty and tv that has DVRs that have freeze issues and channels that we pay for that are not aired for the service we pay for. AT&T knows this and has no reason to strive or take the hit to make sure they keep happy customers. They know they may loose maybe 5-10% at worst for supplying a substandard service and they are fine with this until they see a major drop in customers, which they will never have because of those customers that don’t want to demand quality. We as the customer should always be the upmost importance and we are not. If we were AT&T would see the disgruntled customers on here and elsewhere and would eat the small cost to get the service back to “as advertised” and not raise our prices. They are a multi billion dollar company. They can handle doing the right thing rather then worrying about a small loss.

As I said before, they won’t. They won’t because their bottom line is more important then the customer being happy. Their bottom line will always be that way until we as a customer base demand more. So their is the problem. I am sure a majority of the customers will just say, “It’s ok AT&T. I understand and will just sit here waiting for you to give me what I pay for. It’s ok.”

That’s why at the end of the month we are going back to Verizon and changing all our services back to the ones we had before. The customer service was great when we needed it, which was barely at all. The reduced cost is showing in the lack of service we get and I am willing to pay a few dollars more, unlike AT&T, to get the service I should have as a customer.

Because your local affiliate for ABC doesn't negotiate with all the providers at the same time, no channel does. So this is DirecTV's turn for the local to try and get a bigger rate increase. They will get to each provider when their agreements come up.

You don't pay for specific locals guaranteed. Your package includes whatever locals DirecTV has for your designated market area. All TV providers (that includes Dish, Spectrum, Cableone, Comcast and another TV provider) have in their terms that programming/channels can change at any time. This is because they don't own the channels so cannot force them to stay on, or even in existence (some channels shutdown completely are with nobody anymore).

I have talked with people before who switched companies during a local negotiation to only go through the same thing within months with their new provider. So there can be good reasons for an individual switching out there depending on the situation, I would say that local channel negotiations are not one of them. You will not find a provider immune to negotiations.

In saginaw, flint michigan area here is company that owns Channel 25 1025 (NBC) this is their mission statement on their website. Howard Stirk holdings-

Owned and operated by veteran journalist, entrepreneur, and television producer Armstrong Williams. We at HSH, believe our programming should be groundbreaking, authentic, and enriching. Our belief is to broadcast content that is in line with truth and family values.

We stay true to that core by honoring the parents of our name, Howard Stirk Holdings. The name “Howard Stirk” is taken from Williams’ mother’s maiden name, Howard, and his father’s middle name, Stirk. The name acts as a beacon, remembering the humble, hardscrabble beginnings of the Williams family in rural South Carolina.

The broadcast television industry contains less the 2% minority ownership, so we are committed to diversity and not just in the traditional sense. The stories we tell are true to the hallmarks of journalism which are to talk about the facts, shine a light on topics that are neglected, and enrich the minds of our viewers.

We appreciate your support as we write television history and tell the countless stories from main street to wall street as it's told by the citizens of the world.

That is a nice statement about what the channel owners value, but does not address the negotiation issue:

Per https://tvpromise.att.com/

We want to keep WEYI in your channel lineup, but by law its owner, Howard Stirk Holdings, has exclusive control over that.

Stirk is currently threatening to remove WEYI unless it receives a substantial fee increase. The fact is you can now watch all of the same shows on WEYI for free over the air on channel 25 and, often, online at nbc.com or using the NBC app.

Well you're going to lose a lot of customers and more money in the long run

How outrageous that NBC is no longer available in my market nor was there any notice beforehand to that effect. Very frustrating that on the website you send us to for more information it says to go to channel 9 to get NBC however, that is not true. I have combed your website for a number to talk to a person but to no avail. Additionally, will there be a reduction on our bill to reflect the interruption in this service?

Notices are provided on these forums, in USA Today and at www.programmingchanges.att.com

Sometimes, notices are provided on the channel, but those are up to the discretion of the channel owner.

NBC can be viewed for free with an antenna. If AT&T gave a discount for missing a channel, it would only amount to about $2-3 per month in most cases. You can call the retentions office during business hours and get a much better deal. Take note of when the deal ends and call back a day or two before and get another offer.

How can a channel just disappear? I have been partial to NBC for more than fifty years and it's gone.  I have about two hundred channels I would be willing to trade for WPMI in Mobile. Please bring it back.

It's called "contract negotiation".  The owner of your local NBC affiliate wanted more money to allow AT&T to carry their station and negotiations broke down.

"....The retransmission agreement with AT&T/DirecTV to carry the station recently expired and after several extensions AT&T/DirecTV and the station were not able to reach an agreement that allows for further carriage of the station...."

Don't mess with old people.  The older we get, the less "Life in Prison" is a deterrent.

IF you're really interested in the economics of the subject, this is an article about how Fox affiliates plan to extract higher fees from cable providers in 2019. They were very proud of their plans. The article says that retrans fees are up 29% year over year but apparently, 29% is just a drop in the bucket.

AT&T has done a calculation that the subscribers they lose over not offering a network affiliate is less than the subscribers they would lose if they had to increase cable rates by 30% every year. Every provider is doing the math on this. If you google on "retransmission fees" there are dozens of articles.

None of this helps people who want to watch what they want to watch, but simply blaming AT&T is not right. 29% increases year over year is just greed, pure and simple.

The local affiliate of NBC pulls their feed to raise DirecTV's and our cost, so they negotiate to find an agreement that works on both sides. This makes you drop a company for life? Then you will never have TV as all providers go through this at some point. They don't own the channels. And unfortunately local affiliates are becoming more known for pulling this stunt.

Most of us can use a regular over-the-air (OTA) antenna to get the free broadcast. Doesn't matter the TV provider. DirecTV is even helping us by offering customers in a negotiation area their new Local Channel Connector (LCC) before the full national launch. This way you can get your locals through your DirecTV box and still have the convenience to record from it, don't have to change TV inputs, and you may even get other channels within range (such as "sub-channels") that DirecTV couldn't provide.

How can U-Verse say they are a major competitor when they do not carry NBC.  I can get that with an antennae.  Also you have eliminated the pursuit channel.  What are you doing to address bringing back these channels?
