Account in collections but I forgot to send back equipment

So I had at&t internet and DirecTV and when i hit a rough patch financially i had to give up the services but i couldn't afford to pay the cut off because I was in a contract. I never sent my equipment back and now my account has been sent to collections. I fully plan on paying it off but i wanted to know if I sent my equipment back if it would lower the amount i owe the collection agency.
