Cancellation of DIRECTV and AT&T phone line
Have decided to cancel our DIRECTV account. Called the indicated number (800.351.5000) and got a sales person who wanted me to subscribe to a security plan the AT&T equipment I have. I wound up hanging up on her as she couldn't help me with cancellation. I also called the customer service number and discovered the phone associated with the account was one that got compromised and broke - it is no longer serviceable. We also have no idea what the PIN for the account is.
AT&T has not been an easy corporation to work with.
I moved 2 phones and a tablet from Verizon to AT&T. After much work the phones were partially functional but had no digital functionality (at least the voicemail to txt could not be made to work). The tablet was declared not compatible. Tried to trade in our phones and was told they did not meet the criteria for trade-in. Moved our numbers to a contractless carrier - text voice mails now function.
I wish to cancel the phone account and the DIRECTV account as soon as possible...

DirecTV is not 351 but 531. So sounds like you got an AT&T sales department instead.
So call the correct number and when you get the voice prompt say "cancel" so you are routed directly. Saves you some time instead of waiting on hold just to speak to a front line agent who has to transfer you putting you back into another hold.
