Debt Collections / Restarting Service
Hi,
I have a weird situation: I just moved into a house (as a roommate) that already has 5 direct TV receivers. I would like to start new service. The guy who owns the receivers says that he doesn't have direct TV anymore because he had a bill that went to collections. Can I restart service using his receivers? I would really like to not pay for new ones nor the installation fee if I don't have to, but I'm unsure since he has a debt issue.
Thanks!

Nope, AT&T's new RC1 account system will not allow deactivated receivers to be reactivated as they are to be returned to DTV (if returnable).
You would need to call DTV as they generally will not return service to a delinquent account address and since you are a roomate not the owner of the home this may cause problems. If they do return service you are a new customer provided you haven't had DTV sat service before or after 2 years so the install and receiver are free with the 2 year contact.
