How to stop AT&T spoofed robo calls?

I guess it just started a week or two ago (probably beginning of this month), but now I am getting a spoofed robo call from AT&T every other day, if not daily.  The caller ID shows a local number (why I said 'spoofed'), then when the message finally starts it says this is AT&T and we want to talk about your monthly bill (I have a DirecTV account).  I always hit the block call button and hang up, but it is getting annoying.  Has anybody else experienced anything similar recently, and can confirm if this is really even AT&T?  If it is actually AT&T, how can you get them to stop - short of canceling your account.

I guess the next call I'll just have to stay on the line until an actual live person comes on, then I'll know if it is actually AT&T doing such unethical things as making 'spoofed' calls to their customers (I wouldn't put it past them to do something so lame).

No, it’s not ATT calling, it’s most likely a scam. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop them. If you block the number, they just spoof another one. Your best defense is don’t answer. Whenever you answer, you just let the robot caller know they have a live number and it just leads to more calls.

Hi Sandblaster,

I figured as much.  I understand 'not answering' is the best approach and is what I always do if the number is not local.  But when it shows as a local call I tend to answer more of them because you never know if it might be a legitimate call.  But truth be told I am starting to ignore more and more calls that show a 'local' number.  If it is a legit call the person can always leave a message on the answering machine, which is always on.  Thanks for the feedback.

That is why they use the local area codes, they learned more people answer them.

I have missed calls from this number (877) 714-1509‬ around mid January and I called back the number, When the phone call connected it was exactly the same number from the phone number on my bill. It was automated voice navigation so I entered my account number then connected to the person. The reason for the call was they offered a mobile plan to existing users from Fiber. I felt suspicious so I hung up and spoke to the rep from the number on my paper bill and they verified the number is registered as an internal phone but they took so long to find the number.

Today I had 6 missed calls from this number ‪(855) 419-7365‬ and I did the same way to verify the phone number but this time they could not find the phone number. The one I spoke with said she said it's more likely the scam trying to retrieve my account information. When I called the number from scam automated voice navigation service is exactly the same as the phone number I made the call from the paper bill.

It's  very confusing when I look up online and some reported users saying ATT others are saying scam. 

I hope ATT makes it easier to verify the sales phone number.

Oh by the way, the lady from ATT rep says I can ask the employee number if I don't feel comfortable then call back the number from the paper bill so they can verify for you before proceeding to any offer from ATT.

Not sure I totally follow your discussion, but I do not answer any non-local numbers such as the '1-800' type numbers you mention, and I certainly do not try to call them back (a waste of time).  I just add them to my phone's 'Call Block' list, and then delete from my caller ID 'Missed Calls' list.  Thanks for the feedback.

I follow the advice given to me by an attorney:  DO NOT ANSWER UNKOWN CALLERS OR CALLS FROM UNKNOWN NUMBERS

When you answer, that indicates a willingness to engage in conversation.

I've been hounded today by a spoof number, 17 calls in a three-hour period. I do NOT answer, and they go to voicemail (it's a robo call claiming to be Apple, blah, blah). 

I've read the many threads about ATT not being able to address this, having a hard time with their system simply being unable to "notice" 17 calls from VERY similar numbers GOING to the same similar number (mine) in such a short period. 

Essentially the officially policy then is "you pay for service and we must allow telemarketers and scammers to stalk you every few minutes". 

Something stinks there. If this were creating a massive inconvenience to ATT, or if customers started defecting in droves I have little question a solution would present itself.

Why would you think any telco is monitoring how many phone calls you get?

My thought is that these are "boiler rooms" that sign people up, and then AT&T pays them a commission. Wouldn't it be funny if they signed 10,000 customers up, then AT&T refused to pay them a commission since they were illegally robocalling? 

There should be a law that if a company is sending over X referrals, they need to confirm how they are doing it, and have ways for customers to sign up with a :hot: profile that gives it away that the telemarketer is doing robocalls. (hey, we noticed you signed up a customer named "Natalie Paycheck", you called someone on our secret list, and by signing up that person, you confirmed that you are robocalling illegally)
