Whole Home DVR Service
I am not sure why I have to pay $3 every month for whole home. I only have 1 HR44 and 1 TV connected. Customer service indicates this is the cost for the Genie. That makes 3 charges for the Genie, $10 for HD, $10 for DVR and $3 for Whole Home. Seems like I am being ripped off.

Rip off? Maybe. But we all pay that fee. It's just part of their pricing structure. Only you can decide if it's worth it or not.

All Genies require Whole Home whether you use it or not.

The Genie is DirecTV's Advanced Whole Home HDDVR. As such it requires all 3 receiver services. Just like if you have one HD box you pay for HD service, as long as you have a Whole Home HDDVR (aka Genie) you pay for Whole Home DVR service.
The only way to get rid of the fee would be replacing the Genie with a non-Genie model. As explained the Genie requires it. Whole Home DVR is only optional for non-Genie setups (such as 2 HDDVRs or an HDDVR with a HD non-DVR).
When you upgraded to the Genie the order confirmation would have listed all receiver services. So you were well informed about paying for it before you got the Genie. DirecTV is transparent on these charges and you had the choice of continuing with the install or declining the order, so by accepting it with that info and complaining after the fact would essentially say you ripped yourself off.
