4K for only one TV?

Hi All,

I am getting a new 4K capable TV.  I  know that Directv’s 4K offerings are limited, but I’m still interested in the occasional 4K sporting event. From what I understand, I need two boxes to actually get 4K. You need the Genie HR54 AND a mini Genie Client.  Although we have other TVs in the house, I really can’t disturb them by swapping out a receiver (have an old HD Dvr that my wife refuses to replace as she wants her own playlist) and a wireless client that I move around.   So, if I need two boxes for one tv….1.  How does this work on the setup will I have to take up two hdmi ports on my tv for both boxes and 2. Will they charge me for two boxes (what do they do if there is only one tv in the house)?

thanks!

You can keep your Current HR2X -only by adding a HR54 --you will need to add a C61K mini (both) of which can be used on one 4K TV) The mini will be additional $7 a month.

the C61K is the only receiver with a 2,0 HDMI connection.  The Hr 54 can record 4k which can viewed through the C61K.

The HS-17 can record 4K - and you can have view 2 4K -Games in 2 different locations that have a C61k attached.  However with that setup you will have to lose your Hr2x --no other receivers allowed with a HS-17 --the HS-17 has NO hdmi out put it does NOT connect to any TV,

The C61K mini needed to watch 4K also outputs 1080 so only it needs to be connected to the 4K TV the HR54 HDMI cable is not needed.  Yes you will have to pay the additional $7.00 TV fee and yes if you only have 1 TV you would have to pay the $7.00 fee for both the C61K and the HR54 which is one reason IMHO they went with the HS17.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have a lot to digest. I guess I can always give up the wireless genie client and replace that with the HR54 and then use the 4k genie client on my new TV.
This raises another point, if have the genie client on my new TV, how much of a delay will I notice pulling up content from the HR54 which will be in another room? I can't stand the delay in the wireless client.

What are the models of each box you have now? Just to be exactly sure how the setup would work. Here is a general overview though.

HR54 Genie on non 4K tv (Can connect to a 4K tv, but will not provide the 4K feed to it).

C61K Mini Genie Client (wired only at this time) on 4K tv.

Remember Client has no tuner of its own, uses 1 from the Genie.

4K tv must support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, and 60 FPS

DirecTV Installation, 4K tv must be there

Package Select or above as of 12/15/2016 (used to be only Ultimate or Premier). So only the Family package will not get 4K service at all.

At this time there are only a couple channels in 4K (plus some PPVs).

Even if you have multiple C61K or RVU clients, only one tv can be using a 4K channel at a time.

As a note, the Genie-2 (HS17) supports the 4K Clients (even two 4K streams at once), but it forbids other receivers (HDDVRs or not) so would be a downgrade for your setup.

Sorry for the bump. But I think I will get rid  of the wireless genie and go for 4k.  Just so I understand, will I have to sign another 2 year contract to get the new equipment?  I do have the equipment protection add-on.   Thanks

Yes any new receivers to the account starts a 2 year contract with or without the protection plan.

Choosing to change one box for another is an "upgrade", so does come with a 24-month agreement. Only if it is a warranty replacement (like for like) should it not.

Currently there are 3 different lines of Clients. Regular wired (C31 thru C61), wireless (C41W and C61W), and the only 4K model (C61K).

Since you have a wireless Client, that means you already have a Genie. If it is not the HR54, then it would be swapped during this 4K upgrade. In that event, be caught up on your recordings first as they do not transfer to the replacement.

The equipment protection plan does not avoid the 24-month agreement. It guarantees an exact date you are eligible for an upgrade at the 2-year mark from your last one. As historically you get a free upgrade after 2 years since your last upgrade anyway, this seems to be a moot point.

Protection plan covers cost of service calls ($99), delivery of warranty replacements ($19.95), and remotes ($15). Remotes are usually cheaper through other vendors (assumedly because of bulk discount agreement). The plan is $8.99 a month, which is $107.88 a year regardless of if you use it or not. So, the one-time costs are cheaper in the long run. If you have to use the plan constantly to make it the better value, something is very wrong. It is more for people who prefer a small known cost in every bill instead of keeping a buffer of funds saved up for one-time costs if ever they come up.
