7 DVRS and Only 6 are recognized on Network

SurprisedEquipment: (7 Total DVR's)

  • R22 DVR - Switch out from R15 (Guest Bedroom)
  • R22 DVR - Switched out from R15 (Game Loft)
  • R22 DVR - Switched out from R15 (Exercise Room)
  • HR20 HD DVR (Family Room)
  • HR20 HD DVR (Master Bedroom)
  • HR20 HD DVR (Media Room)
  • HR22 HD DVR (Media Room)

CryProblem:

Only 6 DVR's are recognized (on a DVR) as networked at a time.  The seventh DVR will not connect to the network unless you disconnect one of the other 6.  Then the one you disconnect becomes dropped from the network.  My router see's all 7 DVRs, but no DVR will see all 7. (just 6).

The MRV specialist is supposed to be coming by or calling next week to investigate the problem.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and Thanks in advance,

I should add that all units have DECA's and SWM8 or 16 (not sure which) was installed.

You are lacking in detail as to what exactly you're seeing.  You seem to be using "network" interchangeably.  The coax connection for MRV is referred to as the DECA cloud.  Network is referring to as the connection of  the DECA cloud to your router / computer / Internet.  The only way to properly establish a DECA cloud that will recognize all 7 DVR's simultaneously is by using a SWM16.  In addition, an extra DECA module with 18 volt power supply is used to connect the DECA coax cloud to the router.  Some installers have put in twin SWM8's and used a jury rigged system connected the the SWM8's legacy port to attach them to the router, this will not work properly.

If you want to technically discuss your installation you'll need to carefully study exactly what you have already or is will become a totally confusing meaningless conversation.  When you speak to the installer be advised that two SWM8's cannot substitute for a SWM16 in a DECA environment.

Here is a link that will show the names of some of the devices but it doesn't show your installation.

Tell him you must have a SWM16, period.

Ok.  Hope I state this intelligently.

- SWM16 was installed

- There is a DECA on each DVR

- There is also a separate DECA going to the Router (need to check on power supply voltage)

- Currently (if I quote understand your correctly DCD above), The DECA cloud currently sees 6 DVRs.

MadMack,

Thanks for the links.  Checked them out and will compare with my install.

Supposedly the cloud should include all 7 DVR's. That's 14 tuners, and within the range of the DECA cloud. You might try doing a red button (inside card door) reset on the missing DVR.

Your installation sounds correct, with one possible question. Are any of the HR20's HR20-100's? If so, they require special wiring thus: Feed coax to a 2X splitter. One leg to the DECA module and from there to the Sat 2 input of the HR20. The second leg to a stop band filter and from there to the Sat 1 input. An Ethernet jumper connects the DECA module to the top Ethernet port of the HR20. Again, it's only the HR20-100 that is wired this way. The HR20-700 is wired just with a DECA.

The madmax links, while helpful in identifying component names, does not cover your installation.

DCD,

Here is a photo of the only HR20-100 that I have.  Looks to be as you described.  Will send next a photo of HR20-700 and an R22

Yup, exactly as they should be.  Try that red button reset.

I tried the red button reset on the exercise room R22 DVR.  This is also the one currently not being seen in the DECA cloud.  The reset did not change anything.

However, when I reset the Family room HR20-700, The Exercise Room R22 immediately showed up in the DECA cloud and now the HR20-700 in the Family room has disappeared from the DECA cloud.

Are you positive you have a SWM16 module and not 2 SWM8's?

Heres a SWM8 (you might have two of these connected via a "combiner" module.

Heres a SWM 16, the one you must have. It has the words "Directv SWiM 16 Channel" on it's face.

It sounds to me like the installer may have distributed the 7 DVRs incorrectly over the SWM-16's two ouputs. Each output can only support a maximum of 8 tuners (4 DVRs). Ideally, there should be two 1x4 splitters connected to the SWM-16, with 4 DVRs connected to one and 3 connected to the other. If you have more than 4 DVRs connected to one output (e.g., by using a 1x8 splitter), you'll have problems like you describe.
