Another "Is it my hard drive / Will an external fix the problem question."
Receiver: HR24/100
Software
Original Version: 0x357
Software: 0xd49.., Wed 4/28, 2:47a
Dish: SL5 LNB
Came back from vacation on 12/4 and dish was stuck on "...receiver self check..." screen. Tried red-button and unplugging to no avail. Pressed "UP" to enter diagnostic mode. Receiver would stay on diagnostic screen for several hours then go right to "receiver self-check" screen. Tried this cycle over the next hours/days with no luck. This morning (12/7) turned on the TV and the receiver was tuned to a station and appeared to be working. However, everything is beyond slow. It may take minuets to pull up the recordings, menu or schedule. The schedule is still incomplete, it only shows about three hours ahead.
So the $1000 question is - Does this sound like hard drive issue and if so can it be fixed by attaching an eSATA drive to the receiver? I don't care about any of the programs already recorded.
I know AT&T is only distributing client receivers which I don't want. I have a HR34 and two HR24s and sometimes I use all nine tuner for recording (twice a week this happens - sad, I know). If AT&T won't get me a HR24 can I purchase one from a reputable source?

Most likely a external drive will fix the problem, the HR24s can only go up to 2TB, weaknees.com sells fan cooled external drives. You should replace the HR34. AFAIK AT&T was moving DTV accounts to their new RC1 account system that will not allow the older HR24s to be activated however it may not have been completed when Covid19 hit and the AT&T getting a new partner so if you are still on the old account it is possible to replace the HR24. In the beginning the RC1 account wouldn't activate third party receivers unknown if fixed.

Thanks for the reply. After an hour on the phone with AT&T I was able to get them to send me a new (refurbished? ) HR24 instead of the mini. I've been with them since 1995 so I think that helps. If I was stuck with the mini I was going to WeaKnees to buy a rebuilt 24. I still may get the expansion. 2TB is a lot nicer than 500GB.

All HR24s are refurbished as they haven't made any since the HR34 came out.
