Black screen with only banner

My  Sony TV (older KDL series)  goes black when changing channels. The screen maintains the banner, sound and content of last station for a period of time but then it loses all content except banner. I can change channels but only banner changes, no sound no picture.  I normally watch sports on this TV, Denver Area Altitude Sports, but I also watch other channels. The problem occurs primarally on the Sony TV when changing between Altitude channels or when changing from Altitude to normal, ESPN, MTV . The main TV (Samsung Smart TV series 80) had this problem once. I've had technitians here twice to check all connections and replace the Genie 2 and the 4K Genie Mini. The only way to resolve the problem is to reboot the main TV by turning off the power strip that controls the TV and the Direct TV components.

Is this a hardware or software proble? Any suggestions.

This is a hardware problem. My first recommendation would be to check your HDMI cable and try switching it. Also, you could try seeing if an AV cable would change the situation.

Tried a Samsung VGA cable BN39-01583A last night and did not experience any interruptions. That's a good thing. (AVS won, Nuggets lost).  One event was on regular channel (ESPN) the other on local sports (Altitude). The black screen was more relevant when flipping between local channel broadcasts. I'll keep you posted.  I really appreciate your help.

Because this problem is faced when watching local channels, I would presume that the channel is blacked out due to conflicts between DIRECTV and companies like Tegna. It may also be because your satellite dish is misaligned on a particular satellite but the fact that everything else works in HD makes the blackout as stated before the main reason why. Finally, the issue could also be the HDMI cable you are currently using to connect your DTV receiver to the TV.

@BabyAvery1

I would suggest on the receiver that is connected to your SONY -use your remote --Menu -Setting --Display and uncheck all the resolutions and only select 1080i. Resolution

Your TV may be going blank due to a resolution changing issue

Also you may look at your picture format--(under display) and set for orginial format

Good suggestion goldw1800 but the OP already stated that this problem was occurring on local channels. If his resolution was set to 1080i, then ESPN HD and all the other HD channels with give him an issue.
