Can I fix a remote control that doesn't work like it used to?

The remote works, but I have to get close to the TV and point to the controller on the wall behind the box. The TV responds very slowly to channel changes and volume adjustments, and I have to be very close to the controller. I used to be able to sit in my viewing chair and point the remote at the TV. Can this be changed, or would a new remote fix this problem?
