Can I purchase an HR54 on ebay and add it to my account

Just realizing the equipment the guy at Costco sold me 6 months ago is not 4k capable (HR44-500).  Can I purchase an HR54 on ebay and add it to my account.  I'd like to keep 2 DVRs until I clear the recorded stuff off of the old one.  I realize there's a fee for 4K.  Is there anything else I should be aware of?  Thank you!

You can't have two genie dvrs on the same account (even for a short time)so it's a no to the  HR54. Also the HR54 can't do 4K on its own, you would need a C61K client as well.

There can only be one Genie on the account and you need a C61K mini client connected to the 4K TV to watch in 4K, there is no additional charges for 4K. Costco doesn't sell DTV receivers so did this third party sales person send in a new customer order?

Understand can't have two DVRs.  Thank you.

Can I purchase HR54 on Ebay and replace my HR44?  Any rules against that?

It’s possible but also not possible. First, DIRECTV would not be able to find the HR54 under the orders on your account so they would have to manually activate the receiver. When they do that a two year contract occurs if I am not mistaken. Also, since the HR54 was already on someone else’s account, it can’t be transferred to yours. All new receivers come through either DIRECTV or a trusted third-party seller like Solid Signal.

Call DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and tell them the HR44 died. Chances are you will get an HR54 or HS17 but there is no promise here. What you want to do is not too ‘easy’. You’ll need a replacement Genie HD DVR receiver as well as the C61K since the HR54 can’t project in 4K.

As far as I know there is NO fee for 4K since it is included.

No. Genies never had a purchase to own option. Any on eBay, the original user did not understand they didn't own them at best, or at worst are stolen.

I realize there's a fee for 4K.

There is no fee for 4K itself. You just need the correct equipment and any current package (except Family). As you already have a Genie (HR44) getting an upgrade to 4K does not affect your monthly cost. However, as you only got your equipment 6 months ago then you would not yet qualify for a free upgrade. That means there would be cost for the order itself, thought the bill remains the same.

As you have an HR44 and 2 DVRs, a 4K setup would be in part a downgrade. The upgrade would swap your HR44 for a HR54, but also one of your DVRs for a C61K which is a Mini Genie Client. A Client has no tuners of its own or recording space, so you lose the 2 tuners and 500GB (320GB if HR22 or earlier) and instead steal a tuner from the Genie. Your 4K TV must support HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, and 60 FPS.

With the loss of tuners and recording space, only a handful of channels in 4K, I highly recommend against the upgrade at the current time. Plus, with only 6 months having no free upgrade yet, the C61K would be $99 for the one-time lease cost and possibly $99 for standard install (the HR54 should not cost as that is normally a complementary swap of the HR44 as they are the same line of equipment, but the newer model has the needed specs).

I also suggest checking the order confirmation DirecTV emailed you. Agents in Costco do not work for DirecTV but a 3rd party dealer (usually Smart Circle). Too often 3rd parties will say anything to make a sale.

Adding new receivers will start a new 2 yr contract regardless of where purchased, Ebay is known to sale stolen receivers.

Think of eBay as a public bazaar. You are not buying from an established company, but from an individual in a shared space. Buyer beware.
